My 2c about motorbikes in the cradle :

A bunch of overweight egotistical tossers with too much power under their asses and too little brains to handle it............Hang around in "gangs" and think they own the road on their Sunday breakfast rides, acting all tough and biff in their leathers, and the silly girls who seem to think these guys are God's gift.

I would love to take one of these idiots and challenge them to cycle back home from Harties, lets see who is tough now?

I am just generalizing and not all bikers fall into this category, but a lot do !

A vast majority of guys that ride motorbikes don't think they can fall or get hurt until it's to late. Don't anticipate corners or the speed they are doing when approaching cars, pedestrians, cyclists whatever. Car's included, but and a big but,a bikes acceleration is way more than most realize especially the rider at any speed. Defensive riding all be it on a motorbike or bicycle will help at all times.

Hope both cyclist & rider make a full and speedy recovery.

Oh and yea that's a massive generalization!

NOT saying this is what happened, but cyclists doin U-turns in the Cradle is a subject that we need to address. But at another time and place.

Hope that both these dudes are ok and make recoveries.

This is a VERY valid point. I have said elsewhere on this forum that after my radle ride I will rather drive to Beyers up to the sattelite dish than drive down past Avianto as too many cyclists ignore the lack of cyclist lane and extend 2-3 riders into the car lane and when you give a quick hoot to warn they either ignore or freak out.

Additionally, virtually every time I ride in the Cradle (3-4 times a week) I witness stupidity from the cyclist point of view (riding in the car lane happily chatting to their mate oblivious of the danger - I'm too chicken for this and fearful of a car hitting me from behind, weaving, u-turns without looking etc... and motorists alike. Everybody needs to make a collective effort to get along and realize that we have to share this amazing resource we have at out disposal, free of charge.

Hope the injured are all recovering well!

On a road with a lane reserved for cyclists such as in the cradle. There is no need to take up the whole lane.

Saw it again this morning, two riders next to each other in the cycling lane having a chat at a leisurely pace. Two faste rider having a chat side by side, overtake slower riders, and they en up exposed in the road where cars and bikes travel.

It's a recipe for disaster, and I dont see an end to it anytime soon.

Agree 100% I see this every time I go ride. Two way street people - (pardon the pun)

Doing a blind U turn is the most dangerous manoeuvre you can pull in any vehicle and too many people do it (me included this last weekend as my wife was behind me). FWIW I think this should be strictly banned in all cycling training. If you do it in a group or see someone do it then they should be censured.

I agree with all you say but just want to make one point.

I was driving through the Cradle to Breedts a few weeks ago and a cyclist peeled off the bunch he was riding in and did a U-turn in front of me.

As dangerous as his manoeuvre was, I did not hit him as I was travelling at an APPROPRIATE speed given the road and traffic conditions.

In flying we have a saying: “learn from other people’s mistakes because you will not live long enough to make them all yourself”.

At the age of 21 I was bullet-proof and had a 1000cc Suzuki when a pedestrian stepped off a pavement and into my path. I ended up in an ambulance and spent six months on crutches. The other guy was not so lucky but I learnt a lesson I haven’t forgotten.

I can’t change anyone else behaviour but I can change mine. We all can.

If we ALL cycle, drive and ride with awareness of potential danger it will go a long way to making our roads safer.
