I have just been a victim of careless driving. I was involved in a hit and run opposite the garden village soccer field yesterday which took place at about 18:20. A guy in a white MK1 golf stops as he wants to turn left (my left=his right) into a side road and sees me oncomming in the opposite direction . I have no idea what possesed this bufoon but as i approach (doing about 28kph on mtb) he decides he can no longer wait and turns in , at this time i am about less than 10m away from him. he tries to do it fast , i locked up my back wheel and squeezed the front brake lever hard as i tried to swerve slightly and i try to go around him. Too little too late , i cant really remember everything but i think his back bumper just clipped my front wheel and that sent my flying as the bike and i did a summersault and i landed hard on my left shoulder and face. Luckily a pinewatch car was behind the driver and saw everything that happened . I am really grateful for their assistance as they picked up my bike and called the ambulance. Big thanks to a cyclist passing by in a Scott Addict 20 (Sorry i forgot your name). This super hero asked where i lived and if anyone was home . He then did a 2km sprint to my house and notified my dad of what had just happened. Medics came to the scene. My dad then arrived and took me to the hospital up the road. Few Xrays and exams later sees me suffering from bruised tendons in my shoulder due to impact and landing. swelling to my chin and face. Muscle bruises and numbness in my left arm due to impact and swelling on some nerve running along my shoulder. A fractured finger and a few shiners.

OH DID I FORGET TO MENTION THE DRIVER DROVE AWAY?????

Pinewatch did not get registration number as they were more concerned with my well-being than the driver. I am however going to Maitland SAPS this morning to make a statement.

I am very grateful to everyone who assisted me yesterday. Doc says i should return in 10 days for an exam on my shoulder. My left arm is currently in a sling and my finger taped up. The fracture in my finger should take atleast 4 weeks to heal he says. I am very very lucky as it couldve been much worse.

There goes my training for my first CTCT along with my target time of sub4 (first timer).

Motorists really need to consider us bikes on the road as well as the consequences of their impatience. Had the driver just waited for me to past which wouldve taken about 2 seconds. Everything wouldve been avoided.

Hope you heal quickly. Get back on the bike as soon as it's you're well enough.

And keep an eye out for the car, very high possibility it's a local.

Edit: too many words.

Ahh sorry to hear bud. Glad your "ok".

Dude don't write off CTCT just yet. A few years back I had to have an operation on my wrist that was unplanned and it happened end Jan. I was told I couldn't ride for 8 weeks, which wrote off the Argus. I just got onto the IDT everyday(luckily was off work for 6 weeks) and I either rested my arm on the bars(aero tuck) so it was like I wasn't riding at all according to my arm or just sat up. I did have to miss a few races that I had already entered that where just before the Argus. BUT after the initial cast came off(had to remove the cast to check the stitches in my wrist and change dressing) the surgeon was happy and said I could start doing light IDT(LOL little did he know). Then after the 2nd cast came off about 2 weeks before the race he actually didn't even put a third on and said I could wear a brace if I wanted. It didn't hurt so I got back onto the road and hadn't lost much fitness(just the race pace wasn't there). So there might still be hope. Stay positive and I hope to see you on the line.

I crashed on Oukaapseweg(during a race) 3 weeks before the Argus in 2003. I pretty much gave up and said 'there goes my Argus' - had to wait 2 weeks for a replacement bike and since I was moving uncomfortably, just thought I would cruise around the Cape and see what happens. With the pressure taken off my shoulders, I somehow managed to cruise my way to my best ever sub 3. I learnt that our planning always falls short of the CREATOR'S PLANNING, so take a break when you need to or you'll be forced to eventually.

Speedy recovery, inshALLAH

AmirL, sorry to hear of your accident. Glad that you have no serious injuries. In August 2015, I had a similar accident near the Waterfront and sustained a broken clavicle and needed a plate in the shoulder. Don't despair, you may still be able to partake in your first CTCT.

It is also heartening to note the assistance you received from passers-by.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Glad you are ok. Get better soon.

I have a question though: If the driver wanted to turn left, and you were coming from the front, how could you have been in his path unless you were travelling on the wrong side of the road?

Glad you are okay.

Having been hit before, I know that the shock and 'scare' factor is much worse than a normal crash with similar damage.

Just a question.
If he was turning left and you were moving in the opposite direction, then you must have been cycling on the right hand side of the road? Should you not have stopped, as technically you were following pedestrian rules, not road vehicle rules?

at least you are alive bro

and they always drive away cause they don't care ..

@BIKEBLOKE

Please Im not attacking you....all the repsonses are the same...we are all happy that AmirL is alive and on his way to a speedy recovery....

But this is some B...S..T.

Every time one of us is knocked down and survives, the 1st thing we say is: "at least your alive".

Yesterday it was AmirL, tomorrow it can be me or any of us...some of us might not survive....

Once again...I dont have the answer. But something has to happen. Something has to change.

Im not advocating such actions, but the #feesmustfall movement was so powerful (right or wrong) that it was mentioned in the SoNA 2017.

Is it time we take our safety into our own hands?

MY LEFT = HIS RIGHT . Sorry that i did not clarify this earlier. I was indeed riding on the proper side of the road obeying all rules. I had right of way which he ignored and hence the accident.

Thanks so much to each and all for the support and inspiring stories. I hope to get on my bike soon again when im abit more mobile. My 29er suffered abit. Wheels are slightly buckled and i think the steerer is damaged. Havent gotten a chance to do a detailed check yet. If i do choose to do the Argus (which i probably will) I'll be using my roadie so its all good :)
