Is my frame cracked?

Difficult to tell but maybe you need to scrape the paint off of a section, that should immediately reveal if its a crack or just the paint.

I have the same as spotted by my LBS. Mine is a 2013 model. Also not sure if it is paint or frame.

when was yours first spotted? if it's been a long time since first observation, then its likely just a paint defect. If it's progress, then likely structural.

Paint... for now. You need to watch it for further spreading /opening.

I had my Madone sent to to Trek for a similar thing. It came back with a report as paint crack- not structural.

I'm still riding it after 4years

Looking closely at the picture I would say it's a paint crack, probably due to flexing.

BUT cracking paint could also be from a crack in the base material so for peace of mind strip the paint from the affected area and check it out with a 10x magnifying glass. If you are still not sure after this, carefully mark the ends of the suspected crack with a fine permanent marker and see if it progresses past the marks you made.

Hi Leroux

Sorry to say, I think its starting. Heard any strange creaking sounds lately? Take out your seat post and shine flashlight down the tube and look for imperfections at the site where top tube joins. Are you the first owner?

Very recently. I haven't ridden it yet since its been spotted either. Will keep a close eye on it though, apparently if it is a failure it will show pretty quickly.

Its actually because of the creaking i was going over the frame.

I've lubed and cleaned every spot i can think of causing the creak even completely replaced my BB...

Get in touch with fellow hubber BogusOne. He's does carbon assessment, repairs and painting and he's in the Cape somewhere.

He helped me, at a distance, when I had a 'paint crack', which truned out to be a carbon crack. Very knowledgeable guy.

I'v personally never worked out what a 'paint crack' is? A defective paint job, or extreme flexion of the frame? And if the latter, what would be the cause?

Anyway, good luck!

Pivot bearings have been the source of most of my creaks. Having them removed, cleaned, replaced if necessary has usually sorted out all creaks. Will also be interested to try new BB where the LBS has inserted a sleeve into the BB shell, so now replacing the BB is actually more like just replacing the bearings.
