Hi guys,

Does anyone know if it's not allowed to cycle (road) through Golden Gate?

Thanks!

As far as I know it's allowed, as they do also allow motorbikes. There's no dangerous game so I can't see why not.

Yup, rode there from Clarens a while ago, i think it's about a 60km loop.

If you planning to do that, be aware that there isn't a shoulder for most of it.

There are some nice climbs inside Golden gate though and the extra altitude adds to the fun.

Yes I have done it. Stunning scenery and smooth tar on the loops off the main road but with some potholes in parts. Awesome climbing and views. Definitely worth it. I even went off road a bit bundu bashing at the top of the hills there are old paths up there and so on (I was on a MTB).

As mentioned no shoulder on the main tar road running from Clarens thru' GG to Sterkfontein dam way. The cars and trucks often fly on this road as some use it as a short cut between the Free State and down to Durban. I didn't enjoy that part.. trying to cycle off shoulder even on a MTB wasn't very lekker on this road.

If you will be staying at Clarens, you can also head out to Fouriesburg for a very nice and scenic 80 km out and back route. There is a wide shoulder on the entire route.

And great climbing, especially on the way back. Surrender Hill is aptly named, proving that not everything in the Free State is flat.
