I assume the front starting groups will be there before the short route riders, but the later start groups will definitely go up there with short route riders.

Yep, definitely gonna get interesting up that climb.

Going to be almost impossible to ride up there once it is packed with the "average" rider. Probably only 10% of the field will be able to ride out the entire climb, wear your MTB shoes for some walking.  ;)

I wonder how many entries ASG expect, especially considering it is full road closure. I would say it's fair to say at least 10 000 plus to justify the full road closure?

I think the entry fees are fair as well, but as said here before, marketing will be important. Will be good if Jacaranda and Groot FM can get involved, especially Groot FM who has a lot of viewers on KykNet as well.

Do you really think it is that "un-ride-able"?

There was a time that I could go over it on my 53/12

Will have to go try again.

It is short.

But maybe you are right.......time will tell......

Front groups will cross it, splits will happen in those groups over that climb, so it is a great addition strategically for racing excitement

However, my comment is on the average joe rider, which in my opinion will not ride that one out after riding out Wonderboom Pass and the other little additions leading up to TJ. This climb comes after 80% of the race route, thus my assertion that most of the field will be walking it...

Do you have a segment for wonderboom pass?

I can't find it on strava

I completely understand your argument.

Just pointing out the climb is not that bad.

Yeah it's quite steep, but not as steep as Rose Street in Waterkloof for example, and I got up there huffin' and puffin'. I think it's gonna be a case of push really hard to get over, and then get on with it.

Also, howzit Spinnekop, you okes were looking smart blasting past me (and the girl) up Klapperkop yesterday

The Monument is going to be a stuff up getting in and getting out.

Or ride from home!

Not often I get to say that, so I'm savouring it.

Think I might just park a bit further from the venue but just to far for me to cycle I think, and then again maybe not around 20 km there and back will just mean the Tom Jenkins climb is around 100 km into my ride. Lets see what happens

I created a strava route for the race to look at it and like most events it does not really suite me with those sharp climbs

Both Wonderboom and Tom Jenkins is shown as 0.8 km and 9% average. However looking Closely at Tom Jenkins most of the climbing is done in 500 m and the last 300 is rather flat.

Maybe this will be some additional motivation to loose a bit of weight.

They are far to late to attract 10 000 entrants...if they get 5000 it would be a lot. Many of their market will also be doing 94.7 two weeks later and majority...not the race snakes will not do both

  • 1 month later...

After the talk around Tom Jenkins here and in the cycling community I read Ronel van Wyk suggested using a 27 or 28 at the back made me thinking of getting a new caste for the race, As I am no climber at all my aim is not to walk so went for a recon ride the past weekend.

Of course my gears gave me some issues on the ride and I could not use my 25 meaning I was stuck in my 23 at the back.

However got over the climb two times without to many issues, of course I did not have 90 km climbing in the legs , but thing I will be ok on the day, the surface is not to bad for climbing either, will be more of an issue going down.

Will be looking forward to test myself on the 5th.

Also did a ride up TJ 2 weeks ago just to see how tough it is again. (last time I went up there was in the pre-Strava days, remember those..) It's tough but hurts less than Wonderboom nek IMO.

You can check parking along George Storrar Dr, you have Brooklyn Mall, Virgin Active, a small shopping center and the "middelman" to park on. From the furthest point (Brooklyn Mall) it's a 10km ride to the start. Also pretty much flat, so good warm up.
