Stolen: Pinarello Dogma F8 2016

When: 17 June 2017

Where: Gauteng

STOLEN from Valverde parking lots from bike racks. Five bikes of our group were stolen. A brown Toyota Avanza entered through security on the premise that he was going to collect a friend and five minutes later he left with all our bikes. My Pinarello frame must have been broken to get it out of the Thule clamp.

Ouch..........not nice........sorry to hear about this.

As a side question: is there not security people at the entrance to Valverde?......................clearly they did not "notice/see" anything untoward happening!!

I'm pretty sure that we were there when it happened. When I was leaving I overheard someone reporting suspicious riders on the phone. He mentioned people with no cycling gear or helmets riding R50k bikes.

This is seriously ridiculous though. I had my bike on my rack when we went for breakfast - tied on but not locked. Don't even think my rack was locked onto the car. I even joked that my bike was still there when we got back to the car!

Next time my bike can come for coffee too!

More seriously, if we know where at Valverde you were parked that may help a bit as well. If you're the group I have in mine you were parked in the north east corner of the northern parking lot?

Edit: by "we were there" I mean at Valverde, having breakfast. Not in the parking lot.

Also... did they not see 5 bikes in a car that arrived with no bikes in it? you need to drive out past security as well!

Wow, going into the Cradle and stealing bikes changes the game a bit.

I suppose "we should be grateful" that the persons unknown didn't take the bikes by force or at gunpoint.

In other news, the Spruit is not safe to ride.

I LOVE this place...

We were parked close to the , our vehicles were the first 5 cars from the gate so I really can not see how the security did not see or hear anything.

What has Valverde had to say about this?

JP Valverde, the owner of Valverde did call us on Saturday night to say that he was sorry about the incident and that he was willing to assist us in any way he could and if we had any suggestions on how to make it safer for the cyclists we should let him know.

Such a pity. I remember loving those Bianchis during the cyclelab rides! Sorry for your loss!

Bit of a bugger up this whole situation.. From the premise of entering, to security guard not knowing anything and the manner in which they must have been removed and packed into a car suggest some very strange circumstances. Hopefully you all get pretty replacements, but some serious questions need to be asked.

And why oh why do people still consider a bike on a rack secure?? It just isn't! Take some extra bike locks, or even cable ties. Anything that will make your bikes the most hassle to removed will be the best way to discourage a thief.

I am still puzzled - maybe okes don't want to give away their secrets but how do you get the bike off a locked rack quickly and relatively quietly?  I know bolt cutters work but they have to be big (I've tried a small one when I lost the key to my cable lock) and I know a grinder works (duh) but it's noisy.  Taking the whole rack off with the bolts is going to be time consuming and not that easy, even with power tools.

What I have not seen is just blikseming the rack and prying it open with a hammer and crowbar but that would surely be noisy.

I had a look at the little notice that I I was issued by the guard at Valverde when I when I arrived. I'm struggling with images but essentially it reads that :

Valverde is aware of a bike theft gang operating in the area, and that cyclists should store their bikes in the car or keep them in sight at all times. The gang knows how to remove bicycles from locked racks, so cyclists should not assume that bicycles locked on racks are safe"
