If you doing xc lap racing then level should be fine.

If you intend doing stage racing or going down "Merino monster" type downhills then definitely the guides.

I'm running guides on my scalpel and have often thought about going to something lighter but performance wise they are un matched so I stick with them.

Weight wise there is not much between the level and guides.

I have the Guide R, Been using it a few weeks now. Upgraded from Formula RX, what a huge difference overall. Everything is up 10. The feel when pulling the lever to when the pad start making contact is immediately noticeable, which was almost non existant on the formula. The stopping power is also alot more due to the 4 pot system.

Check out the Formula Curo as well. Well priced and I've only heard good things so far.

Second this. I only recently tried out a pair because I managed to get them at a very good price (my go to brakes are Shimano XT), and I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised.

Between the Guides and Levels though, for your intended use I would say go for the Levels.

I've been looking at the Cura's as well. Reckon they'll be good for most things down based? Just found out a LBS here has them and heard great things. Not a great price but not too bad. Kind of thinking between some Hopes and these.

The Curas are definitely more aimed towards Enduro/Aggressive trail type of riding, I think when it comes to purely DH they would be lacking, but for what I can do, and for what most mortals can do they will cope very well when the trail points down. I haven't had them for long enough to give a proper report, but will do so in a couple of weeks. PS - I am using them with Shimano XT Icetec rotors in the 180/203mm sizes.

My 2c, if I could have afforded Hope brakes it would have been a no brainer, Hope wins all day every day - and this is not at all an insult to the Curas, the only brakes I would pick over Hope is Magura.

Let me clarify... When I say it's between Cura's and Hopes. It's new Curas now or waiting a fair while to double my budget before I can get near the E4's.

For the majority I ride I'd say it's enduro / agressive trail and token pretender runs on the DH's in Tokai.

In that case I would say the Hopes would be a heart decision then; the Curas a practical decision that will not disappoint.
