Slowbee Posted August 1, 2017 Share As the saying goes, not bad weather, only bad clothes. I have bad clothes. The weather can start cold and get warm in the cape, or it can get cold and stay cold, or it can get cold and rain or freeze or just do what the heck it wants on any particular day. Like today the weather cant decide what it wants to do, from freezing rain to hot sun and back 3 times. So where do you start with getting winter kit? Do you upgrade and get a warm waterpoof fleece jacket and keep the normal cycling kit? Or do you get a warm vest and keep the good old first ascent rain jacket? I have a salamon gillet that is fleece lined and it is really great. Keeps warm, but the arms get chilly and I land up wearing the rain coat to keep the wind off as well. Then everything lands up being to hot. I am looking at this kit as both as a way for potential cold and wet that may arrive for the Munga and for every day use in adverse weather in the cape. Any other suggestions guys? Maybe just ride with a jersey that can be thrown into the bag? What do you early morning risers ride with *remember, must fit into a bag with a whole bunch of other kit.. think Munga* Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Slowbee Posted August 3, 2017 Share ok, so whittled things down to needing a jacket that is wind proof and waterproof. something like this but more cycling orientated. https://www.firstascent.co.za/product/mns-ar-x-jacket those el chepo cycling bright yellow things, while keeping wind out, do nothing really to keep water out and you get soaked in them. so any help would be great. solty Posted June 18, 2018 Share What really makes a difference for me are: Buff, especially if the wind is blowing, but also quickly causes the most overheating.Long finger gloves for long descents during nippy night or early morning rides.Leg warmers, definitely. Mine are First Ascent, slightly furry on the inside. Never found that my legs overheat, but straightaway feel a cold bite if they slip and expose some thigh!Jacket obviously. Thin Apple jacket type thing works for me, just to keep the wind out. Tight or adjustable cuffs to keep the wind off sweaty arms when descending. Long sleeved stretchy tight fitting under-shirt as a base layer, I got one from MrPrice Sport a few years ago. And then a regular cycling shirt over that. Its good if you can open zips and push up sleeves when climbing and then close up tight when going downhill. My winter kit is as follows: Assos Skinfoil spring/fall base layerArm warmersCycling jersey (tight fit, too keep out the air and of course aero!)Gilet (I use an Anatomic one)Buff360° glovesLegs warmers (would like to invest in a pair of knees warmers instead)Sandwich plastic bags to keep the toes warm. I tend to overheat quickly and this setup works the best for me. I tried a jersey, but it just too warm for me later in the ride. With the gilet, if I do get warm, I can tuck it away in my jersey pocket or even open it on a climb to cool off. Because going downhill again, you get cold.
