Ok so whats bothering me about the Munga is the cycle light. How do I keep that charged. Are there charging stations along the way?

mmm, my "current" set up involves battery GPS / speed thingy with battery petzl on the lid and looking to buy extreme lights that should last the event when used on low power.

I would however like to use my phone to stay in touch with people (when signal) and take pics etc etc. Keeping the phone charged then becomes a headache. So looking at finding a way of making this happen.

That gadget Sepia posted my just work. It can keep the phone charged. And charge itself from the sun.

Slowbee, whatever you do, test the system properly beforehand and make sure it works. My prediction is that you are going to be frustrated out of your skull and will throw the solar thingy away into the karoo bossies within a day. It sounds like you want to keep things simple. Keep it simple then. GPS running on 2xAA with 2-3 spare sets (lithium). Good quality headlamp with some spare AAAs. Extreme lights bikelight. Bring charger for that in case it doesn't last. Powerbank with 10000 capacity to charge your phone (around 3-4 times). Keep phone on flight mode when riding to use the camera, only switch on when you sant to use for comms. Phone charger for incase. Bobs your uncle.

I used Extreme Lights Core (low setting) and did not need to recharge ever. EL sells a bigger capacity battery as well. But makes sure to have backup (headlamp).

Uncle Tim, better be enjoying his ride and have a decent ride report. The waiting is horrible!

I been following his ride on Instagram. Looks epic. O wait that sounds like I am referring to another ride, Looks better than epic. Looks awesome.

  Solid advice. All taken on board and will stick to what you recommend.

Important to test everything beforehand. Know exactly how long your gps runs on a set of batteries, or your bikelight battery before it needs charging. Plan accordingly with a bit of contingency. Remember to load the gpx file on your phone and practice using the osm app incase your gps craps out.

It is taking a lot longer to go through the submissions and whittle them down to a winner than we anticipated - sorry guys and girls. If you weren't all so keen, we wouldn't have this problem, of course.Thank you, all!

Working towards the end of next week...

Thanks for the patience.

Did a little 500km AR last week, so if they're still debating the winner, here is me adding to my submission(which now seems a little lame now on rereading it!)

a cold morning in Mordor

original submission had to be less than 100 Words, IIRC

I once got on a Shosholoza Meyl train in mid December – a one way ticket to Laingbsurg. I had my bike, a bunch of maps and four people who though I knew what I was doing. It was bikepacking before I knew the term existed and we travelled minimal, only resupplying after three days. It took us six days to get to Diemersfontein. It was hot, it was hard, but most of all it was very hot. We travelled from farmhouse to deserted farmhouse in search of water. We drank liquid from windmill reservoirs that looked like tea. We splashed our bodies full, only for it to dry within ten minutes on the bike. Distances were calculated on when you could find a spot of for an afternoon Zzzz under a tree. It was an amazing week, the other four still speak to me. I had done the Freedom challenge before then, but this was different. This was touring. This was hot. I remember thinking then, you couldn’t race in this. The distance of The Munga doesn’t faze me, nor does the heat. The combination is the crux. I can do this, “hou vas my dop, check hierdie move”
