The perfect commuter

Correct.

The frame geometries are normally different and tend to be a bit more comfy and aren't as stiff as the more racy road bikes coming out lately.

Gruppo is the same bar gear ratios. Typically with SRAM rival you'd see a 40t Chainring on the front instead of 52/36 or 50/34. Few come out with cantilever brakes most are disk now.

And then just tire clearance.

So ... where is the confusion?  You just answered yourself.

Nice, thanks for the confirmation.

I've got some extra bibs and bobs just laying around from upgrading my road bike, so might just as well use them to build a CX bike and just find a frame with the right tyre clearances and then buy new tyres and I've got myself a CX bike.

Brilliant!

Get a CX bike, I use mine to commute to work occasionally. Can also double as a training bike, a SS can't really.

BUT you will struggle to get a Crux, they aren't being imported anymore.

Wait what? A SS can't be used for training? I beg to differ.....

One word. CHEAP!

Agree with Duane

If you are only commuting 6km you want a reliable and cheap bike to commute on.

Personally, I recon the http://qhubeka.org/2013/?page_id=88 bike is the way to go ... looks good in black!

During my varsity career I commuted a few times on a SimpleSam. Awesome little bike indeed! Nice fat tyres (I believe they come out with 23c), easy to maintain.

Main consideration I reckon would be budget. If funds are unlimited I cannot foresee a nicer bike for commuting than a Surly Straggler. If you want something sub R20k, then I would most probably go for a On One CX, sub R10k I would go for a Momsen STR monster cross build. If you want to buy something off the shelf sub R10k there's SimpleSame, which is based in Pta (and awesome people to deal with!!), and Rook bicycles down in Cpt.

I like Simple Sam and Rook .....both these bikes are being used by riders in our commute group.

I commute on a single speed CX bike with hydraulic discs. I have 40mm tyres that I run tubeless and flared drop bars. My commute is a mix of road and spruit - I find myself riding mostly in the drops. Personally I value having good stopping power and brake modulation (especially in the wet) on a commuter. At a lower price point I guess this points towards a hardtail mtb.

I was never going to get a Dutch bike for commuting as they look sh!te. However the simplicity of it is awesome. Single speed with back brake and carry rack at the back and 28"x32c tyres. I can easily cycle 30km's on it at a leisurely pace while carrying some luggage.

Get something simple and cheap. And you can definitely do some training on a single speed!

My budget will be around 30k for the cx bike.

Shortlist is currently

Spez Crux (if I can find one)(first choice)

Canyon INFLITE AL SLX 8.0 PRO RACE

Colnago Prestige(35k based on the website)

Ridley X - Night

It wont just be a commuter though, it will become my go to bike for outdoor training and these non technical mtb races. We holiday mostly in the Drakensberg and most rides I've done there a cx bike will be more than fine.
