Is anyone using road disc brakes at road races?

I own 1 road bike a spaz Paris Roubaix 2004 model with ultegra rim brakes, after 14 years riding in the foothills of the Swiss alps (ok granted, you can cut that in half of if you count Winter and IDT riding) It still has the original pads / rims and I’ve yet to have problems due to poor braking.

I wonder how many roadies are going to have an accident when they accidentally grab a handful (as you tend to in emergency situations) of these new wonderfully more powerful brakes....

I don't have a problem switching between rim brakes and disc brakes so why would they

Its like each time that I switch between my and my wife car, I have several accidents because of the difference in power.

Maybe its only a problem for pensioners.

But it only takes only one guy with a problem to take down a hole bunch...

What do you do to your disc brakes that they require maintenance?

On my MTB I basically bleed the brakes (takes 15 minutes) every 2 years or when the brakes get a bit squish (happened to my back brake once after a heavy lie down). Other than that no maintenance...

Commuting in wet weather in the city you often get contamination on the disk and then that horrible noise starts.  Then it is cleaning/replacing pads.  Yes the bleeding does not take long but it don't have to bleed my rim brakes.  Other than the brake pads that needs to be replaced I need to replace the disks now as well as they also wear.  Have not had to replace my rims due to brake wear.  It is not a train smash but it is more maintenance.

So whats new....you must have some shitty rim brakes because if I haul ass it stops the wheel ...sharply

For normal use yes, but I was thinking more like when that [something] runs in front of you and your automatic reaction is to grab a handful of brake

Just speculating...

Don't blame the tool in your hands on the tool attached to the saddle. If you just grab a handful of brakes every time you panic, you're at fault, not the brakes.

I love this argument...

and then counters with not needing to replace rims due to brake wear. :w00t:

Show me a worn bicycle disc outside of proper Alps DH shredding for days on end.  I have yet to see it in 25 years.

Have you tried Salusa45, apparently it works

Cooked the brakes before and since then have had constant little issues popping up.  Braking is alright now after bleeding and replacing pads but the noise generated on those disks is enough to get me banned from the EU.  So on several discussions including the hub guess what would apparently resolve the issue? ... wait for it .... replace the disks.

Disks have about 4500 km on them.  My new roadbike with those crappy rim brakes have done close to 4000 km .... farkall problems.

Please enligthen me where I have erred that my disks end up looking like this ..

And that’s one reason they invented abs, because not everyone can control their braking actions as well as they think they can

Not sure what "cooked" the brakes means, but to remove the noise, if it wasn't there before (ie. frame / mount issue / resonance) then you need to do the following:

  • take discs off bike and clean properly with a disc cleaner or iso alc.
  • then lightly sand them (just braking surfaces) and then clean again.
  • take pads out of caliper (and I reckon issue is here) and also do proper soak / clean in ispropyl alc and sand sand sand and iso prop again.  (or disc brake cleaner).
  • Then when placing back into caliper, put a little (!!) grease on the piston contact area with the back of the pad.  Just becareful to NOT touch pad surface or rotor.
  • Loosen caliper bolts, pull lever and realign (unless pads are unevenly worn, then replace).
  • Do a few mega high-speed to stop stops without going over bars.
  • Have a beer.
  • Enjoy noise free riding.

NOW!  Before the ^%#ers above jump in and chime in that they "NEVER have to do anything like this with their crappy old 1940's road brakes that have cycled across China",  this 15min job is really VERY seldom done, and only when nothing else helps.   If you have the time I'll share a story of my Bianchi and a Campy set of brakes that screamed like it was giving birth with simultaneously having a cactus shoved up it's butt.
