I am thinking to buy a new bike but would like to know what is better for short cc rides on a hard tail mtb? It is worth it to buy the 1x11 or stay with 2x10 gears?

Thanks

Don't know the Chizel. Ride it first where you intend doing most of your riding. Get the 34T it's easy to change back to the 30T. With that said maybe try 32T.

I just like the simplicity of 1x. Changed my one mtb from 3x10 to 1x10 with 32t chainring, added 16t and 40t by replacing 15t and 17t. Yes on flats and downhill one loose top-end but the SIMPLICITY is so nice, would have liked to go 34t chainring but with my shimano bcd being 96bcd, I have difficulty finding a 34t chainring so opting for the 32t 96bcd which at this moment I can get. Going to change my 2nd mtb at month-end from 3x10 to 1x10 with the same gearing as the other one. It works for me very well.

The trend is to go 1x. I ride a 2x10 since 2014 and all is fine, I even did the burger 75km with it and experienced no problems with my front derailleur and the clutter on my handle bars didn't bother me. I will go 1x when someone gives it to me for free or it is vrek cheap

1 x 11 for me. It’s quiet. Lower maintenance, easier to clean (lasts longer) and lighter than 2x10. Chainring size depends mostly on where you plan to ride. I found a 32 was perfect for my needs doing MTB around Cape Town.

if you are going to do short rides I wouldn't be bothered about gearing. I went 1x10 as it looked cool, and picked up a nice upgrade kit for really cheap. It takes time getting use to not having those nice granny gears and loosing out on top speed, but I guess it also depends on how you ride. As for me I do a lot of climbing and not bothered about top speed, as mentioned above i enjoy the simplicity of it. I normally ride a 32T and when I do the long stuff I gooi the 36T.

1 x 12 - same range as a 2 x 10 can be dialled in and all the 1 x benefits without the downside of the lost gear range 1 x 11 has - although you may or may not need the range.

If you are getting a new bike with 1x11 then maybe stick with it but in my books 2x10 properly setup is unbeatable, no rubbing/not noisy, cheap yet the same range as a super pricey 1x12 setup, how can you possibly go wrong!!

There is another very decent advantage to a 2x setup, you can drop a lot of gears in one shift with the fd, either up or down. I enjoy having that, often if you are riding in and out of small valleys/dips it's just enough to drop to the smaller chainring to get up the incline on the other side.

Plus with the Eagle GX upgrade can have all the above at a fairly reasonable price. You don't have to change your crank or use Eagle NW chainrings.

Don't you need the correct driver for your hub (that's IF it's compatible) to run GX Eagle as well?
