Good bike options for my soon to be 10 year old boy

He has pretty much ridden the wheels off his 24" Giant, so I have been looking around for a bike for my boy's upcoming 10th birthday. Why are most kids bikes fitted with grip shifters, my kids hate them and I don't blame them as they are hard work for little hands...

And whilst I'm complaining, why do kids bikes weigh a tonne...

Had a look at Cycle Lab in Fourways the other day and they had diddly squat...

So needs to be a small frame 26" and light, any suggestions?

Used 26" bikes are cheap and you can pick something up that was top end only a few years ago for not much money. Rather go that route and have a better time riding, and a better resale value in future.

This in a nutshell.

A while back my youngster was given a used 26" Anthem by some of the local nice guys and his riding took off. From a distance he could be mistaken for a small guy on a 29er and he still uses that bike to this day..

I am in a similar situation with my boy's birthday coming up soon.

This bike is top of my list at the moment: Titan Hades 24″ 9R Disc

I got a 2nd hand one for my son who’s just turned 9. We went from 20” straight to this and he loves it. He does look like a small guy on a 29er; so lives up to the name.

The grip shifts had been changed to trigger shift and I’ve disabled the front shift for now so he can pay more attention to the trail without fiddling too much. It also keeps his speed below his ambitions but more within his current ability.

You are going to find amazing 2nd hand 26er bikes on the market for cheap. My nephew got a top spec Cannondale Scalpel 26er with full carbon frame for around 10K. You can even find good buys for less than that.

Absolutely no reason to buy new. And then you don't have to worry when he throws it around and have spills. He should at this age concentrate more on getting his technical skills built up on pump tracks etc., and not having to worry to get scratches on a new bike.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, my son turns 9 next year and I told him if he can save R1000 I'll chip in with the rest for a new bike. He's currently on a 20inch Titan that we got 2nd hand from a friend. Although these bikes are nearly bulletproof, it's now fairly old and has taken a beating. He's a bit small for his age so will probably look at getting a 24inch Titan, that should last him a good few years if he looks after it
