New vs Used Hardtail

Hi guys

Looking at getting a hardtail MTB for mostly cross country riding.  Look at the following three options

New 2018 Merida Big Nine XT edition (12.19kg) - R17 000

https://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/hardtails/cross-country-marathon/2018/big-nine-xt-edition-9126.html

New 2018 Momsen AL529 (12.62kg) - R18 000

http://momsenbikes.com/bikes/hardtail-alloy/al529/

Barely used 2014 Momsen SL929 carbon frame build up with mainly SLX M7000.  This will come in at about R20 000 and will probably be about 10kg

Fork and wheelset will be roughly the same on all three and will be upgraded over time.  What will be the best option?

Thanks

I have a hardtail that I haven't listed in the classifieds yet. At the bike shop for a service, but is sub 10kg,and very well specced for a lot less than you are willing to spend. Drop me a message if you are interested.

If you have 20k. Get the Big nine XT edition, save another 3-4k up in the next month or 2 and get wheels from CWC for it. They have American classic or Stans on Hope hubs

You will have an awesome bike then.

Thanks guys

Really leaning towards the stiffer, low weight used carbon frame.  I am limited to these 3 options as my LBS is given me R18 000 store credit on really good trade in deal on a gravel bike I have.

These bikes have pretty similar components.  The only real decision is between a used carbon bike that has barely been ridden (LBS owners bike) or a new bike, the used carbon bike will just be about 2-2.5kg lighter.

For that money I would rather go with the Carbon. Total build is lighter and frame is stiffer and has the potential to be a fun race bike.

Only risk I can see is that the carbon might be damaged, but with the owner of the bike also being the owner of the LBS I can't foresee that this would be an issue. As screwing you on a bike he has personal knowledge of will be bad for the shop's reputation.

Do you guys think R10 000 is a fair price for a 2014 Momsen Sl929 frame, only been ridden twice. Buying from LBS that is giving 1year warranty

Seems "slightly high" in price, but I suppose if its in perfect nick with really no scratches or chips is probably not too bad a price, considering its not a private buy but a buy from a shop that has to pay its rent etc.  The fact that they will give you a 1 yr warranty is nice as you usually don't get a warranty on a second hand carbon frame...

I'd say go for it!
