varkie2 Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Hi Guys So i am getting complete drivetrains for all my bikes (all 10 speed) before the manufacturers take the piss and go from 10 and 11 speed to 40 speed and none of the good stuff are available anymore. So i ordered 10 speed blades for my sram force crank 130 bcd. 39 53. And they sent me 11 speed blades. Will this work with a 10 speed setup and chain etc. Google gives 2 answers. yes and no. Pls help
NordicElf Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 A mechanic accidentally put a 10 speed chain on my 11 speed set up and then couldn't figure out why the gears wouldn't set and recommended some dodgy modifications to my derailleur clamps etc. I smelt a rat and took it elsewhere and new mechanic noticed the 10 speed chain. so my answer is no.
AngryAustrian Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 No problem. I used to run 10spd DA derailleurs, 10sp Sram cassette and chain with 11sp DA cranks, worked beautifully. However 10sp chain with 11sp casette will probably not work as Nordic pointed out as the chain is narrower.

At the back ( cassette ) it will make a difference. On the front ( Chainrings ) it should not make a difference. I am assuming OP is talking about the chainrings. If so, I would not be worried about it.
Cyclewizz Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 I've read the opposite works.11spd chain on 10spd chainrings At a guess I'd say that you should be ok.The 11spd rings should be slightly thinner than the 10spd ones and since the 10spd chain is slightly thicker it should fit over the rings.

He then quoted on 10 speed blades, but sends me 11 speed blades, and then tells me it will work. I then call the same shop and talks to the guy in the workshop and he says no it wont work as a 10 speed chain wont go on a 11 speed blade. And in my case i have 3 spare 10 speed chains now already. So now all the admin to drop off the blade and reorder. P.S this is from a very big online SA company. Notice to all bike shops, please employ people who know what they doing. Thanx fro the advice!

Unless the supplier said they will refund you BUT you can keep the blades, why should it be your problem to find a work around for their mistake? There is nothing in it for you to be stuck with the wrong goods.

As mentioned above, the rear compatability is more important than the front.

Me rida my bicycle Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Only difference 11spd chain is slightly narrower than 10spd. The difference is so small I have used 11spd link on 10spd chain in an emergency. I have ran 11spd on 10spd rings with absolutely no issues. Given the tiny difference in chain width I don't see why it won't work the other way round.
