T-Bob Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Whhaaat? I reply to all my emails! Maybe going into my SPAM folder? So what's your real name so I can search... Pah... you and the donkey are dead to me now! Actually something must be odd as I've sent some emails about skills clinics etc that seem to have disappeared into the void as well. I'll PM ya.
DIPSLICK Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 1 - I can do a lot more than I thought I could. Tally for the day was 31.5km and 1150m climbing. 400m more than I've ever done, till this weekend. I thought gravity made mountain goats?????? seriously not baiting not stirring, thats 750m thats not gravity that is flat??? I saw the rock and roll garden that looks moer impressive but different strokes for different folks,,, I would think if you want to do proper downhill surely 3000-4000m climbing should be a "min" in endurance
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted October 17, 2017 Author Posted October 17, 2017 "Family matters and work got in the way of my training" - are you sure it wasn't all the spur burgers and beers that you write about? Thanks for an entertaining write up, it literally has me tempted to sing up to one of these events. If you're calling my father being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer "too many burgers and beers" then yeah.... Trips to Durban to visit, help the rentals with their business over the weekend, spend time with my own family and fit work in as well really didn't leave much room without sacrificing something I wasn't prepared to sacrifice.

But yeah. Longer days in the saddle are definitely in order. Don't know when I'll get to 3,000 - 4,000 m climbing in a day, though tbh. EDIT: After Duane's comparison, I'm perfectly happy with never getting there.

I hear you on the 12km, I just think if you want to play in the mountains you must be a mountain goat, otherwise you just out there killing yourself

Don't know when I'll get to 3,000 - 4,000 m climbing in a day, though tbh. You won't. Ever. 3000-4000m in a day is TDF Alpine stage territory. There is an ocean of difference between 1000m and 2000m. And an even larger ocean between 2000 and 3000.
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted October 17, 2017 Author Posted October 17, 2017 I hear you on the 12km, I just think if you want to play in the mountains you must be a mountain goat, otherwise you just out there killing yourselfkilling me softly... yeah. Look, there are a crapload more long rides on the horizon, and a crapload more of this sort of riding that I want to do to get ready for next year. 3,000-4,000m is a crapload of climbing, though. For comparison, La Thuile EWS in 2016 had 1,200m climbing on the liaisons. Lifts were used elsewhere. Whistler EWS had 1,417m climbing over the day. But Finale Ligure EWS was 114km and 2,910m climbing. So it all depends on the race. Even Ligure has a lower average ascent per km than Ezel does... And that was held over 2 days. So 57km & 1,455m per day average.

Even Finale Lugura as the biggest event on EWS only has 2,910m and that's over 2 days.

It's a necessity. BUT. And this is a big one. I still enjoyed it properly without having done that. I would probably have enjoyed it more with more training. No, I definitely would have. But that's not the point. The point is that it's achievable for your average Joe.
BlackSnow Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Pics from the weekend.http://esphotography.co.za/race_gallery.php @Myles & TEA Ladies it was an awesome day out. Massive thank you for pushing me along.
NicoBoshoff Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Armageddon (Saaltjie trail) leads into Canaries up high so you have a 15 minute run there, full Firehut is another solid run, and then Red Phoenix / Plumber full. That's pretty much three massive top to bottom runs at Jonkers waiting for you. But I still reckon you can simulate that lactic acid maximization in the gym with the right exercises if you don't have 6 hours every Saturday to go on Instagram like-hunts like some people I know...

I just want to have that combo of 6 hours AND lactic acid overload... As for exercises - climbing (rock) is a good one. As are bodyweight exercises to failure and beyond. Need to look into it more though.
