But that goes for life. Pity people don't consider that too often (goes for more than just cycling)

Speaking for my lonesome slow self, I was on my own so defaulted to single file, and experienced a number of dodgy passes. And yes, I kept as far left as my skill and wind would allow.

Someone on the hub will tell you that even if you were on your own you were probably still not single file :P

If you want to be a softy, go ride a MTB, road races are not for pussies!!

Nope, but still not an excuse for riding others off the road because you're a pillock. And yes, that actually happened - poor guy would have loved to have an MTB right there

EDIT: not saying you're a pillock.... you know what i mean...

I have seen people riding such that you have to treat them as a group, because you never knew where the rider was going to be the next second.

The malmesbury - stellenbosch section really was a mess. To be honest, I think it would have been stressful just due to the wind. Adding in tired 109km riders with no idea that they are being borne down upon by a barely-hanging-together bunch of guttering, grumpy 170km riders just made it a mess. In less windy conditions, the overtaking would have been much simpler.

A similar story was the overtaking of the slower teams by the seeded bunches. It wasn't a big issue as it was early in the race and conditions were nice - but still meant that a peloton had to overtake a 2 person wide team. Might future editions of the race move the slower teams to an appropriate start point with regard to the team members' seeding?

On a side note: anyone know a good person to have a look at the lekker scar on a carbon rim that I got avoiding some plonker who meandered into the road after a waterpoint as 100 members of E-F bunch came past?

Then a courteous "on your right" call by the front rider of the faster single file group will allow the slower rider to "brace" him/herself, so as to not be surprised. Then, an encouraging comment and a thank you by the last rider in that passing group will go a long way as to keep things friendly.

Why is this so difficult a practice?

How loud can you shout?  Into the wind?  While hammering it?

A fast bunch usually makes a fair amount of noise, but you have to overcome the problem that sound will appear to travel backwards.

Sometimes there's no shouting, sometimes there's a "keep left" loudly and then the slow riders get upset because there's no "please." (I've actually had this.)

Sometimes one bunch shouts "keep left" and the next "on your right", and the poor slower rider doesn't know where he's supposed to go.

If you're going 5 km/h faster it's easy-ish.  If you're going 30 or 40 km/h faster there's no point.  You're next to them by the time you say "keep."  You need a truck horn strapped to your bike.

well what i got from one of the tiletoria ladies was that "you with the orange socks, move!"  i asked where i should move to as i was almost in the gutter already.  she said "move back, that's my (censored) spot" i told her to "(censored) off and just ride"

why couldn't she just shout "passing right"?

to add some clarity, i was riding on my own at that point and looked round and saw this bunch approaching.  i hung onto what i thought was the back of the group, but the expletives pointed out that i wasn't.  again, just be nice and i'll be nice back to you.

......seeing that the mechanic thread go closed

I have never seen anyone support the Anti-Perineum League so vociferously. (Speaking as someone who is making do with just his road bike at the moment... :()

You have to ask?

Pm 'BogusOne' for all things carbon.
