Thanks Myles, i guess if i can sacrifice a bit of  the top end i would be prepared to but maybe you right im happy with 2x10.  Just thought ditching the front shifter, and FD would be a good way to go.

it would neaten things up a bit, but you'd be missing out on one or both sides no matter the combination. If you went to a 32t up front with an 11-50 you'd have a gear which is 6.7% more difficult than your current setup, and 11% slower than the top gear.

If you went to a 34t you'd have a 13.3% harder granny gear, and a 5.5% slower top end.

If you went to 36 you'd have a 20% harder granny gear but replicate the top end.

Essentially you'd need a 30t up front with a 9-50t cassette in order to replicate your current setup. And that doesn't exist, yet.

... but for that little 9 tooth guy on the bottom. Combined with a 38 on the front ...

Didn't know you get a 9 at the back! This would be the way I'd go. Currently running 42/28 upfront with 11/36 at the back. I have enough gearing for climbs (was 2/3rds up Spioenkop when I realised I was not in granny yet), but need the bigger gears for flats and downhills.

Sounds like Quadzilla can't spin his legs any faster than 60rpm.

Thats the answer i was looking for.  So basically a 32-11/50 is my best "compromise".  Hmmm.  Only way to find out would be to test one out .  Thanks Myles you've been a bundle of knowledge.

32-10/50 if you get an XD driver and go 12 speed Eagle.

32-11/50 if go 11 speed with a Sunrace cassette.

No - it's just nice to be able to sit at 53km/h at 100rpm while the 34/11 guys are spinning along at 140rpm!

This ^ mostly.......

I do, however, feel comfortable cruising at 60 rpm.

42front 11back with 29" 2.25" tyres does give you 53km/h at 100rpm. But you seem to have exaggerated slightly with the 34front 11back where you'll actually sit at 53km/h at 124rpm.

On a trail you're not going to be at those speeds and still feel the need to peddle. On a dirt road at those speeds you may as well tuck and rest your legs, because you're losing all that effort to wind resistance anyway. And if you're absolutely desperate to peddle, 124rpm isn't that bad.

I am still running a 2 x setup on my Commencal. I doubt I will ever change but just maybe for a 12x system in time too when the prices are nice and low.

I have a 11-40 cassette matched with a 25T oval and a 38T upfront. The addition of the 40T ring made a huge difference to me climbing, but also its seems as if I spin alot, but its cool as I can take my time up climps, as long as the legs and lungs keep up.

Now on the Fireye I have a 1x10 setup 11-42 matched with a 32T oval. Man I struggle a bit on climbs and really really really miss my 25T. I was very tempted to sell the 32 and get a 30, but I think I will stick it out and HTFU on this bike to make me better on the climbs.

Well spotted. I had a 34 in there but changed it when I remembered my Epic partner put a 32 on his bike after stage 3.

Those sums are correct for a 32 on the front.

The whole point of 29ers was to carry speed over the hills, particularly rollers. Bomb the downhill and grind up and over the other side. Now you have people spinning out on the descents, freewheeling halfway up the roller, and then spinning like crazy to get over the top.

It's like limiting Formula 1 cars to 1.6L. Oh wait....

53km/h 100rpm. Just to be clear we are talking MTB here? Those bikes that ride over rocks and trees and stuff?

Yup. Those same ones.  ;)

They also do things like Baviaans and 36One and 7weeks and K2C and Attakwas and Desert Dash and Trans Karoo...
