I purchased a dhr2 tyre 2.3 to use for a front tyre, I didnt know that dhr stands for downhill rear. ive got a ardent 2.25 lust on the back now. It works fine but I can feel that my legs are working harder now. Is this setup ok like that or should I.consider putting a narrower tyre on the back.

Thanks.

Personally, I don't think DHF vs DHR makes that big a difference (well at my level of riding). I run a DHRII 2.4 on up front on my bike & that was at the suggestion of my guy my LBS who's opinion I respect very much, he's not led me astray yet (nevermind the circumstances that led me to needed a new front tyre on a virtually brand new bike!).

Honestly, I haven't noticed much of a difference except that it felt like the DHR rolled faster downhill than the DHF.

Either way, pedalling with a downhill tyre is always going to be a pain the butt.

what sort of cycling do you predominantly do?

Used both the DHF and DHR on the front ... found the DHR to roll a little quicker.

Either way, both were fun on the front .... also did the W2W with the DHR on the front, and did not feel like this was impeding me at all.

Look, your first step is to realise that you are running quite a tough/heavy tyre setup. So, if your primary intent of riding isn't rough trail shredding, then your setup will be overwhelming ito resistance.

As tcarthew said, my trusted LBS dude recommended I run the DHRII on the front of my steel hardtail trail/#enduro bike. I bloody love it! Only worth putting the DHRII on the rear if you are serious about your downhill game...

Anyway, some say Die Muishond runs a Maxxis Ikon on the rear of his trail bike... and for a fast rolling, great XC tyre, I don't think that's a bad idea at all.

Ardent's are great and long-lasting, but if it bothers you that much I'd replace it with an Ikon (slightly lighter and easier rolling option) or Specialised slaughter (great all mountain semi-slick, still heavy-ish) or even an Aggressor (I'm running it and like it). As Myles Mayhew says, you don't really want to go narrower than 2.25 on the rear IF trail/#enduro is your thang.

Don't be scared to experiment - that's the childlike, discovering joy we extrapolate from riding bicycles on dirt...

Has or does anyone run a High Roller II up front? Thoughts compared to DHF and DHR? My LBS recommended those for the front - less rolling resistance but still plenty grip?

OP - I would stick with the Ardent 2.25 on the rear. Had it on my previous bike and loved it

Agreed RE the Ardent on the rear as a happy go lucky all trail kind of riding rear tyre.

Currently using that on the rear of the Spitty with a H/Dampf on the front ... can't wait for the HD to die so that I can get a DHF or DHR to go on the front....not a big fan of the HD as a front tyre.

Still plenty grip. Maxxis rates it as a slightly wetter conditions tyre than the minion from what I remember

You wont believe how much better a DHR or Magic Mary is up front than a HD. MM is still the better of the two IMO. I wont even run a HD at the back. Horrible things.

would also be interested on trying a butcher (such as on your new ride) on the front.

For what it's worth (not sure how much worth that is), I see the DHR II are also about 100g lighter than the DHF (according to the Maxxis website, comparing 29 x 2.30 EXO).
