This is what I like about the challange.  Because we are in general so different in our commutes (distance from work) it is actually not a fair playing field in general but quickly smaller challanges develop among us in the challange that ends up with you pushing yourself to commute more, which is nice.  I like to keep an eye on the overall statistics.  We have collected 80 000 km which is twice around the earth in one year.  Not bad me thinks.

yeah I suppose if I commuted daily instead of just on a saturday the mileage would add up alot quicker. Its just not possible during the week though as I drop the kids at school.

But from 14 Dec the wife is on leave and the kids are home, so I'm going to try and convince myself to commute during the week too.

As it is, I only started commuting on saturdays from 1 Sept.

When we were still living in SA, the kids school was about 4,5 km away.  I would drop them off at school and then went back home and got on the bike and commuted.

thought about that, but that would make me late for work as the kids school only open the gates at 7am.

Wife needs to be at work by 7:30am so its not possible for her to drop the kids off either.

I thought about leaving my car at the kids school in the mornings to save time, but there is no secure place that I can leave it and still have access to it late in the evening when I get back.

These are the cards we've been dealt, I just work around them and get my riding in when I can.

even just one commute a week is 100% more than no commute.

agreed.

I must say, I'm enjoying my riding immensely again. Over my 20 odd years of riding there have been a number of slumps, but I'm on the up again.

Congrats Cat-i on hitting 5K !

Been trying to keep the gap behind you below 1900, but you just wouldn't let down a bit :)  Congrats on 7k

I was hoping to get to 4800; an avg of 400km per month. It looks like it will be possible to still get to 5200 - an avg of 100km per week. There's 2/3 commutes left this week, and then I'll be back between Christmas and new year for possible 2/3 more rides.

Been a glorious morning. Sun is up earlier, so it felt like a holiday-ride when we entered Delta park this morning. Everything green and smelling of fresh earth. But no puddles yet.

If these threatening clouds allow it, we'll do a short loop through Emmarentia this afternoon. Love commuting in summer.

Just updated about a months worth of commuting. Also now into the 5k's and safely planted in 5th position. In the beginning a podium looked possible but you guys were clocking some serious mileage...

Yesterday morning when I left the weather was not perfect but it didn't look like it would rain. 5 min before I left work in the afternoon it started raining. I had chosen to wear my awesome white versus qhubeka socks. Now I was left with 3 options. Wait till the rain stopped(roads would still be wet so this was not a good idea), Ride home without socks on(I am a strict follower of the proper length and looking sock brigade so this was certainly OUT OF THE QUESTION). 3rd option was to wear my plain black work socks that just so happen to be the exact right length. Phew I dodged the bullet of ruining a pair of my versus socks and just as well because when I got home I was so dirty that you could not see where my black socks ended and my leg started as it was all the same dirty colour. I had a much more distinct tan line when I took my socks off though.

Things I've learnt today. Don't race roadies. Especially of you're on a gravel bike. You snap spokes and then the chain. In that order. Leave roadies be. Continue with your peaceful commute.

Need to join Endomondo (spelling) next year. Just hit 7000km for the year of witch about 5500 was commuting.

You can still join now and spend a few hours loading the rides. But I wouldn't suggest that because you will push me down a spot. So your best bet is join next year :whistling:  ;)
