I put a new chain on but i did not use the master/free link to join it . I am not used to the new system so reverted to the old school method on just pressing the link together with a link remover /joiner and then lightly burring the center pin over . I made sure that i didn't have a stiff link by bending the joined link side to side .I rode 70km hard yesterday through the fields and it was good . Should i rather put the master /free link on or leave as is ?

Yes. Please put in a new pin or quicklink.. I’ve done what you did, ONCE.....Worked for a good few rides, then guess what happened on an out of saddle power sprint......The side plate opened up and I went over the bars, proppa eina.

better to use a new pin designed for the job, or the quick link

Also much easier if you buy one of the BBB quick link tools from sportsmans (or anywhere really). reusing a pin might work, but also it might not for long.

That was my concern that it would last a few 100kms and then fail . I have the quick link but need to buy the tool  to fit the link .

Use the quick link. Easier to remove chain for cleaning.

There is also the chance of the link failing. I am an experienced mechanic but had a link fail once. Bending side to side does open the plates but also rounds the edges.

The links work perfectly and are safe.

What tool do you need to fit it? One just needs a chain 'breaker' to remove the 2 pins then use the quicklink to my knowledge .... Even the 'special' tool to release a quicklink is nice to have but it can be removed, albeit with some effort, without the tool

I took the advice and put the Quick link in .My old chain had one but i have not managed to get it off yet . ( Job for the week end ) The new one went on easily after taking off the extra side link . My old link remover has also seen better days

Use a cable tie to get the link off .Pull the two pins together with the tie and squeeze the link sides together

What a brilliant way to loosen it .

A piece of thin nylon cord works pretty well to remove the master link/magic link...thread around the two pins   so it crosses over  wrap extra cord around your gloved hands for grip  and give  nice tug on the two ends and its loose...So if you carry a chain breaker an a link remember the piece of string .

Or alternatively, just get the right tool for the job. They are not that expensive.

One like this you can use to fit and remove the link in a few seconds.
