Hill2Hill and Dusi2C Cancelled

Just read that the Hill2Hill has been postponed for 2018 due to no title sponsor, and that Dusi2C has been cancelled.

Devastating news for KZN riders, considering Hill2Hill has approximately 1200 riders each year.

How can the biggest one day race in KZN not find a sponsor?

They changed it last year to Easter weekend from the traditional September date. Perhaps the changing to Easter weekend caused a decrease in numbers, but can't be sure, as I wasn't able to ride due to it being Easter weekend

I'm sure you and many others. I won't bother doing events on Easter weekend particularly if I have to travel. Not cool for the family and my young son.

Don't know why they can't get a sponsor though...seems to be happening a bit more these days.

Ashburton series too....it sux

Hill2Hill will be back in 2019 allegedly as a more affordable 2 day stage race....

Dusi was just too much on the plate in conjunction with Sani and J2c, Berg and Bush etc .... the priority is the family farm and other business ventures like wedding venue and what not.

A shame, because Dusi was (for me) one of the more special events out there and the two day format was perfect.
Maybe the Hill2Hill guys can take that over, Hill2Dusi or something like that.

Love KZN events, and KZN in general, which I could do more there!

Think the mistake made was to change the dates from September , next people I know also started to complain about the price unfortunately, pity as I liked and aiways supported this event.

Not convinced a 2 day stage race is the answer thou.

The original event was somewhat more like the comrades version of MTB.

Pity this has been lost, if it does become a two day, different route, entirely different event,

could we be heading for a rough 2018...seeing a lot of for sale/to let signs going up...looks like i am going to loose another customer ...you know when a company cuts back on the rags to clean stuff...short time...etc.

more massive warehouses being built in Sydney road...for ship loads of imported stuff...when a country like SA is importing chickens and shutting down local suppliers...you know we are in the shyte.

The only business booming in SA is security related....drove past blue security the other day...the entire road was full of technical (alarm installers) vehicles...at 40-50...which is next door to the electrical wholesalers...only 4 electrical contractor vehicles..

This is becoming more and more common, races being cancelled/postponed due to lack of sponsors. :(

Yep, sad reality that the cycling boom is over for now. A number of events are struggling to get numbers & sponsors - I expect more of these threads.

That said - an old established event like Hill2Hill attracting 1000+ riders should not really tank? Can't help but think there was also a slip-up on the organisers side and not just economics?

If you look at the last few years the numbers have been declining. Each race use to be limited to 1000 riders and you had to enter early or no entry, the last few years they weren't even getting half that.

I think a combination of factors are working against races, sponsors, money, travel, saturation and what I believe is changing is the dynamic of MTB'ing where people are waking up to the fact that they don't have to be racing marathons, but can buy fun bikes and get out there every weekend and ride cool places without having to do any/many races.

Good point, dynamics have changed a lot the past few years - I see a lot more people cycle nowadays but people are also far more picky about spending money on events, doing more group rides and less events.

Pity about the Hill2Hill, a really tough challenge.

splitting it into 2 days will be a shame. As with the ashburton series, forcing the 2 day event system didnt really seem to work?

there are enough stage races imo, why make more?

I think organizes need to focus on cutting cost to the effect that entries cover the costs.

Forget prize money and fancy this and that. Just make it more like an organized ride sort of like the park run's but for bikes and this is coming from someone who is normally in the top 10 at H2H not a weekend warrior.

Thats because the guys have to protect what little they cannot sell due to tough times. Thievery is rife
