Spurcycle vs Forza bells

But, at R990 each, would 2 or three Forza not do the job. I simply cannot pay that for a bell!

I am in KZN and not Jhb. so things are tight and I don't care what I look like on a bike, let alone, what flipping bell I have.

There's a principal involved here. If we support blatant violations of others innovation then we serve the dumbing down of the system and we're just as responsible for destroying jobs as JZ.

I ordered a Spurcycles bell, had to wait a long time for it because I had to order from their website, No SA retailer knew when they would be able to get them again. Distributor out of stock and all that. Bought a couple of Forza bells as well. No where near as good as the Spurcycles. The hammer often jams and has to be lubed as regularly as my chain. Tone varies from day to day and the rubber grommet isolating the dome from the retaining screw hardens quickly. Can't buy spares for them so have to improvise with o-rings from builders.

In the end you get what you pay for.

yes and what you pay is R990 for what boils down to be A BELL

Well yes. But there are people who pay R150k for what boils down to be A BICYCLE.

Point taken.

But I still have problem in paying that price for a bell.

I have no problem with how the tone varies every time it rings.  As long as it does its job and rings.

Thanks for the heads-up with the mods you made, I will watch out for this.  I think there is spare money saved to made these mods often, even buy a new bell.  O-rings are pretty cheap.

Lubrication is part of the bike maintenance, check nuts and bolts, lube, alignment etc.

Guess I will have to add tone to the list.

You're not alone in the wanting to justify the spend on a bicycle bell. I was in the same space a few years ago. Then I probably spent about R900 in various bells that lasted a few rides and then had to be replaced.

Even asked paragon tech to import an anabell or the smaller isabell from Arundel bike. Those have good reviews for quality.

I'm now in the space where I want to spend money on stuff once and not have to constantly replace. I donated a box of spares to the science and math school last year. I got a fright at the monetary value of the disposable crap that is marketed as quality bike components. Included in the box was a few sets of lights bought locally and marketed under many names.

yeah spurcycle bells are pricey for a bell but it will probably outlast the bike and you can hand it down to your kids like I handed down some Tonka toys trucks and scslextrix to my daughter and nephews.

Sometimes we just have to value things as more than the sum of the parts. Maybe Art is a good term for Spurcycle bells

I spent just over a grand to replace my drivetrain recently, no way in hell i'm spending 900 zar on a bike bell.

I can shout, or whistle or tune 'scuze me for free..

That's why i'm riding bell-less

spurcycle is a bit of an extreme example of this, and not far off this vibe

handmade in the US..if you see how they source all their parts it's almost like an experiment in how to make the most simple product as convoluted as possible.

it's a piece of art, built by artists.

therefore the economics don't need to make sense.

but in saying that, there's no reason why a knockoff in china can't be as good for a 10th of the price

Exactly, and all I know is that Quasimodo did not earn his spurs on a Forza bell..
