Garmin Edge 520 or 820 for MTB?

Having a look at the two options there doesn't seem to be much in it besides the bigger screen and some mapping options.

Which do you recommend for MTB use in SA, does one even get MTB maps for the 820 for SA?

I believe the screen is the same size. 820 is touch though, has wifi and mapping allows routing on the device. Both have crap SA maps loaded so you end up using open maps. Think the 820 has a microsd slot so you can store more maps.

Me, 520 all the way. Don’t like touch screens with gloves and they tend to crack easier if knocked.

If you not exclusive to Garmin have a good look at the Wahoo Bolt. Same price as the 520 (cheaper at the moment) and packed full of features.

I also had to make that choice a month ago. I decided on the 820 because of the routing it has. Less stress if I am in a town I don't know

The 820 with all its awesome features is hands down a better unit than the 520. However i would find it pointless to have on a MTB and would rather opt for the 520 instead.

For 99% of the riding I do I dont need maps/routing at all so that feature would be completely wasted on me. For others like you its obviously different.

The touchscreen is something I would avoid if I can, heard many complaints from mtb friends.

520, based on size alone. On and mtb I beleive the smaller the better. And touch screen with full finger gloves just doesn't work at all.

520 all the way,the touch screen (820)is a PITA on the trails, especially when sweat/water is on the screen.

I have the 820 and the touch screen is a pain with gloves.

I have an 820 that I use on both my road and mountain bikes. I always ride my MTB with full finger gloves (only use full finger on the road in winter) and I have never found the touch screen to be any better or worse than without gloves.

I use a 520 with my full hand fox mtb racing gloves

You can also reverse mount the out front mount and still have the 520 fit next to stem and handlebars which is great
