....  Cliff's comments are unlikely to be taken seriously by those of stable mind and those that are unstable may do something stupid against cyclists anyway.  I don't imagine it will have any impact on the safety of cyclists.

problem is that the average youngster (ie GC's target audience) are imbued with NO sense of responsibility' date=' accountability or answerability. they have all been taught that they are entitled to whatever they want regardless of the impact on others or society - not exactly the makings of stable minds.

i see were your coming from, but it's a little like blaming marilyn manson fro columbine. i don't think he's necessarily fuelling anti-cyclist sentiment, but he certainly is cheapening life.

What Gareth said is obviously irresponsible and shocking, its sadly close to the truth that its many motorists secret fantasy. I think if those motorists could see this picture they would change their tune though. It should be printed in full size in every paper for all to see the shocking reality of such a "fantasy".

Youre on a hiding to nothing going after Gareth. He's right, there'll be many motorists who dream about mowing down cyclists. He was just being monumentally insensitive to make light of someone being killed, but it's easy when it's far away. I'll bet he didnt suggest motorists fantasised about mowing down motorcyclists after Natalie du Toit was hit.

i stil believe that any motorist who causes an accident through reckless or negligent behaviour, that results in serious injury or death, should be forced to go work in a morgue for a month or two minimum. i've been flamed for this view previously, but unless people realise teh consequences of their actions, and experience it first hand, they will not change their behaviour. we can't exactly go maiming and killing these fools so lets just put it in their face for a while. hopefully long enought hat they will have nightmares every night for the rest of their lives.

gareth cliff talked about it on 5fm. made a stupid reference to the fact that this might be a 'motorists secret fantasy' or something. not funny really.

Is he ever really funny? smiley1.gif

We get chirped by drunks from a pub & News Cafe on our cycle route on Saturday mornings at 6am who are probably too smashed to know the way home. Imagine if that guy gets behind the wheel, we're toast. My thought used to be that you're safer in a race, the probability of being run over, is much lower. But then again...

This is the most horrible thing i ever saw..I was planning on getting a roadbike but ill be thinking twice. Everyday i see roadies in hendrik potgieter (westrand) dodging peak traffic..totally insane..just where the hell can you cycle on a road these days..

i hope my thread doesn't put you off getting one. they are worth owning. just choose your routes carefully!

I even considered to bike to work as i live 10k's from work...i just can get myself to imagine riding on the road with 80% idiot drivers on it. West rand traffic around hedrik potgieter/beyers naude is just not worth it. Problem is, many drivers will leave you for roadkill instead of stopping to help. A mate at work trained for the 94.7 about 2 years ago..he was run over and the idiot sped off. He said he felt nothing..he was just cycling and the next moment he's flat on the tar...luckily he lived to tell the tale.
