Thyroid and adrenal testing

I’m wanting to get some blood work done to check my thyroid and adrenals are doing what they should.

 

Anybody have any idea where or who would do this? Obviously first call would be my Doc but wondered if anybody has had these types of tests done.

 

I’m in Pretoria area.

Your GP can order the tests and take bloods for you - if there are anomalies then they will refer you to a physician.

 

No point in going directly to a specialist at all.

I would rather take V12man's advice and see your GP, i.e. someone who went to medical school and got degree rather than someone who did a course or two at the Tech (if you are lucky) or on the internet.

Dr Ford’s licence to practice was suspended pending a review application to set aside the penalty.

 

A well-known Pretoria homeopath has turned to the court after his name was removed from the register after a 42-year career.

Dr Albert Ford, 71, wanted the court to suspend the Allied Health Professions’ Council of SA’s decision to suspend him from practising, pending a review application to set aside the penalty.

Ford maintained the punishment was excessively severe.

His woes began in 2012 when a patient, Janessa Leita, laid a complaint that he had prescribed medication containing cortisone to her over three years. Leita alleged Ford had assured her the medication did not contain cortisone and that she would not have used it if she’d known about the severe side-effects.

 

She claimed that, as a result, she suffered from the symptoms of an adrenal crisis, swelling of the face, skeletal pain and extreme fatigue. She instituted a damages claim of R1.3 million against Ford but he settled it for R250 000.

Ford was charged with unprofessional conduct and pleaded guilty to one charge. The Board for Homeopathy, Naturopathy and Phytotherapy recommended to the council that his name be struck off the register and it was. Ford said he had misunderstood the legislation, had a dispensing licence and genuinely believed the medication did not contain more than 1mg cortisone.

Judge Hans Fabricius ruled that the court could not hear his application as he had not exhausted all the internal remedies.

I have done blood tests - I have blood tests every three months, I can give you my readings that was taken back in 2017 and then fast forward the results to 2019 to show what the medication has done for me. TSH or a thyroid even on the Eltroxin is something that has to be monitored closely and the medication adjusted almost after every blood test. Here's my results: 

 

2017      - ABN - Result - Reference Range - Unit

TSH           *L        0.08          0.35 - 3.5            mIU/L

Free T4                 11.6          7.6 - 16.1            pmol/L

 

2019      - ABN - Result - Reference Range - Unit

TSH           H        3.98          0.35 - 3.5            mIU/L

Free T4                 7.9           7.6 - 16.1            pmol/L

 

Test were done through Ampath and I have access to view all my results on their website. 

 

The above shows that my TSH was extremely low in 2017 and then in 2019 it was lying on the high side. The medication has been adjusted to counter the high end result and to bring it back into balance. I only use the Thyroid Extract from the "Snake oil" salesman and over the last two years my energy levels has gone from - I can do 5km on the bike before having to lie in the veld to recover, over to 4 TB races. Yes the medication I take is unconventional but it certainly does work, we're 4 kids in my family and all 4 of us have thyroid issues - my oldest brother and sister are on eltroxin where my second oldest brother and myself are on the "snake mans" stuff. 

 

I do not want to go into too much details about the results thus far but let's just say that myself and brother are the most active of the four and we have better results thus far.

Sorry about that, I assumed he was a GP, I actually never did proper research on him, my brother just had good results and I followed blindly  . 

Then again, ever since the Neurosurgeon told me that he wanted to do a fusion of my L4 & L5 vertebrae I have always looked for a "unconventional" or Hocus Pocus - snake oil salesman solution. And yes, I have done an MRI and yes I have been to two Neurosurgeons with qualifications (Of that I'm sure  ) but that was over 5 years ago and I have not yet done the surgery and I will keep managing my back the way I am currently doing

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 6 years ago. I was treated with Eltroxin only, but was not feeling much better. I saw an endocrinologist, and he did a more detailed blood panel. My treatment was hugely successful, and I am functioning 100%. I require tweaks to my medications every few months to stay in range. When I fall out of range, the impact is felt very quickly.

 

Eltroxin recently changed their formulation and my levels dropped precipitously. The new formulation did not work for me. Euthyrox did the trick. 

 

Medication pack includes Armour (natural T3), synthetic slow release T3,  and T4 (Euthyrox), 3 times a day.
