Long, less technical rides

Morning All,

Some advice please!

I am looking for an area/bike park in or around JHB that will give me an opportunity to get some decent time in the saddle to work on base fitness on the MTB.

I have been to a couple of the bike parks (PWC and BCC mainly), and while the fun factor is definitely way up there, I would also like to just hit out for a good 3/4 hour ride...

Any suggestions?

I am in the Kensington area, but will gladly travel for some open road or a decent group. Only issue with the group is my fitness has taken a kick so I want to build it up before being a handbrake...

TIA

You can go to breedts nek but you will need a phone mount for your handlebars so that you can put your phone there and watch porn or something.

If you dont you'll die of boredom or fall asleep.

Northern Farm was always good for a nice long ride with some hilly bits thrown in.

I used to be able to do a good 50km while only ever using a few short bits of "connecting" trail more than once.

Cradle mtb loop is great.

Park at Broadacres shopping center, take the dirt roads around the back to the cradle, complete the full loop and then ride back to BA.

Depending on your speed, this is around 60km which should take less than 3 hours. If you're wanting some more time / distance, you could always do a second loop - it's roughly 30km.

Northern Farms as Bonus say.  Otherwise perhaps Modderfontein which is closer to you - I haven't been there in a while but you should be able to do a 2-3 hour ride easily, if you repeat some bits you can do 4 hours

I would suggest going South, meet up with the Doc riders and do their 80 - 120 km loops.

They are non technical, good time in the saddle rides with varying pace groups.

They also do a semi monthly Vaal ride which you can join and ride back with some of the riders...

Some good options.

Ping awesme here on the hub and he can send you the newsletter and ride schedule.

Thanks!

Will definitely give Modderfontein another bash - last (only) time I went there it was mudpit, didnt really make for a long day out.

Will also look up the DOC guys...

Would definitely be keen to slot into some group rides - have not had much luck finding any this side of the world though

If you're prepared to drive out to Pretoria. Buffelsdrift has the nguni trail that has 45km. First 35km just gravel, you could do it twice

Anyone got route maps for Northern Farm?

Trying to figure out if it will also suit the wife - beginner!

Have a look at their website, seems they have some gpx files available to download - don't think it has been updated recently though but the main trail network at Northern Farms hasn't really changed:

There are quite a lot of jeep track and some easy to ride single track (on green and blue trails) so Northern Farms should be ok for your wife, however saying that there are some hills to get back to the trail head so if she is not very fit she might struggle a bit in the beginning

It's almost impossible to get lost at NF. The car park is at the top of the farm so, as mentioned above, every ride has to end with a climb somewhere along the line. But so much really easy jeep track and dirt road means anyone can manage.

we ride from Cradle to Magaliesburg often. Many routes to follow from there and would be a 4+ hr ride. Otherwise in and around the cradle would give you plenty of safe riding!

Try find one of the groups doing the Meyersdal to Blockhouse/Vaal route on weekends. Very flat ride perfect for base training, up to 130km loop. Just don't ride it alone.

Kensington is near Germinston/Alberton.  Then Thaba trails and Rietvlei farm has good single track and not too technical, with lots of parking.  Alternatively you could look towards Edenvale/Benoni for some ride groups as well.  There used to be a vibrant grope (sic) of cyclists in Minedump Valley (aka Cherize Theron Homeland)
