Long, less technical rides

I used to ride from Kensington to Modders, do the 40 km loop and ride back.

This was well over 3 hours in the saddle.

The route was about 85Km.

I live in Modderfontein and have a 65 km route out along the R25 looping back via Irene.

It's a mixture of tar, gravel shoulder and farm roads with not a lot of climbing. Normally takes me 3 hours on my single speed.

I want to do this route again on Sunday morning as preparation for the JUMA 72km

You could also ride from Greenstone to Red Barn, do the 30Km loop there and cycle back. Total distance will be about 115Km.

Done it once and really enjoyed it, It's a mix of tar, district roads and then Red Barn.

I was going to do this last Sunday but then a handyman offered to come around in the morning to fix something. I did not want to leave my SO at home alone with a stranger.

Kensington is near Germinston/Alberton.  Then Thaba trails and Rietvlei farm has good single track and not too technical, with lots of parking.  Alternatively you could look towards Edenvale/Benoni for some ride groups as well.  There used to be a vibrant grope (sic) of cyclists in Minedump Valley (aka Cherize Theron Homeland)

Thaba's longest trail is about 35km (last time I was there end 2017, early 2018), more technical than spending TITS. Rietvlei blue is even shorter, more technical (green route maybe flat enough but too short unless you do the loop 5 or 6 times at least) and not a very long time of riding unless you repeat several sections.

Rietvlei has some very technical blue route turn offs.

If I wanted TITS, I'd definitely not be going to Thaba or Rietvlei, I'd go to Modderfontein or Suikerbosrand.

Try find one of the groups doing the Meyersdal to Blockhouse/Vaal route on weekends. Very flat ride perfect for base training, up to 130km loop. Just don't ride it alone.

Do you know where and what time they start?

I've joined the group on Saturday mornings leaving beside Zumbug and do a +-40-50km loop. That was about 2 years ago though, but sure they still do it.

Kensington is about 20 km from Benoni which is were we ride from on Saturday mornings ( winter at 8am ) into the small holding , rural and farm lands of Bredel , Pomona and Bapsfontein . We are a mixed bunch of mainly older experienced riders with lady's and younger novices .The group is usually between 6 to 12 riders . We differ the route every single time so that no routine is formed .  We generally do a 60 to 80km ride at an average of 20 to 22kph depending on the route leader . The route is a mixture very little gravel road and a lot of farm road between mealie  and bean fields with a lot of good single track ( bumpy in places as its not often used ) . We generally end up having a coffee at the end of the ride .

It's amazing what you can find to ride if you try!

That sounds great - could you give me an idea of which way you went?

Been a few years since I lived up there, but they used to meet at Virgin Active in Meyersdal on Sat and Sun.

thaba full green is fine for TITS, decent speed and not technical.

The DOC guys meet at Rietvlei in the parking and head out from there, find them and facebook and they'll send you the newsletter with ride details weekly.

Anyone got route maps for Northern Farm?

Trying to figure out if it will also suit the wife - beginner!

She will be fine at nf on the red trail. Just ride in front and walk the minimal tech stuffs if she is not confident. I would also recommend you send her to Ride Like A Girl skills sessions. I funded my special lady friends sessions and she has gained confidence and skills rapidly.
