Decision Time...

I'd say it depends on the type of terrain you will be riding on. The new Anthem's geo is a bit slacker than previous models, but it does lack a bit wrt rear suspension travel compared to the Camber.

I'll go against the general consensus and put my vote to the Camber....

And squeeze them for more discount.

More discount should be possible seeing as the Camber is no longer being made, and that as soon as the new Stumpjumper Short Travel is on the showroom floor later this month they are going to struggle moving the left-over Cambers...

Between the two I would go for the Camber. Both are brilliant bikes, but the Giant Anthem is an XC race bike where the Camber is a XC capable trail bike. The Camber will be better on the trails, has slightly more travel, and a dropper. It definitely makes more sense for a weekend warrior whose main objective is fun. Make no mistake, the Camber is race capable - one of my mates finished 3rd at the 36One on his Camber this year.

If your objective was to race I'd reccommend the Anthem.

I think it is still a trailbike if you know how to ride with the amount of travel available and the slacker geo makes it want to slash the trails. But it is true that it is more race focussed (have you seen what some of the WC tracks look like??) and what is defined as "trail" riding is a very wide application and can extend all the way to almost enduro apart from the really big drops and jumps.

So for light to medium trail use I would still say you could use an anthem. I think the types of trails the rider wants to do needs to be very clearly defined

Wants to ride, and will ride?

yes both. Does not help you buy a bike to ride in your driveway but does not work for the bike park you want to ride end of the month.

I agree completely with what you are saying... the Anthem is very capable with the right set of skills and rider aboard. But, at the end of the day the Camber is just going to do more techy stuff (even Enduro trails) with ease, whereas the Anthem will feel a bit more skittish - that has been my experience riding the 2 bikes anyway. So for what the OP wants the Camber just fits the bill perfectly. And... it makes a mean XC race bike too!

Guys I will be riding mostly around the Tygerberg Hills area - Bloemendal, Meerendal, Hillcrest, Hoogekraal etc... Thinking maybe the camber would be a light overkill for this area?

Local bike shop has offered Anthem 2 for R35K including brake upgrade to SLX, 11-46 upgrade instead of 11-42, bike setup + 1st service, bottle cage, bottel etc... Sounds like a good deal where with the camber it is used and no extras included in the deal...

Thanks!

So the N+1 rule?

Need a XC hardtail, XC Full Sus, AM bike, Trail bike, Enduro bike, Jumpbike & Downhill bike.

Camber will definitely NOT be Overkill for that area. Dude, it's an excellent bike. I'd far sooner ride it than the anthem. Anthem is NOT a trail bike. Saying that is like calling the Scott RC a trail bike cos Nino can ride one everywhere.

Camber every day of the week.
