When to go to the Doc

Please help.

About 3 weeks ago, while going down hill on a nice piece of single track, I fell into a very rocky area.

Banged up my shoulder, lower leg and wrist.

Time and meds sorted it the shoulder and the wrist so I do not have any issues. But I noticed yesterday that my lower leg is still swollen. Not as much as it was at the start. But there is still a swollen area about the size of my palm on the outside of my shin. It is not blue but it is sensitive to the touch.

I do not want to tell the wife and get her all worked up. But when should I make the call to see a GP?

Forget the GP and go to the emergency rooms.

Something small could stay something small when you go to the Doc ASAP. A cut or broken bone is pretty obvious, but an injury that you can't see whats wrong, could get worse before it gets better. Maybe its nothing, but rather safe than sorry.

Probably a Haematoma - you can leave it and see if it reabsorbs, or more effectively, drain it.

Bruising does not always show very clearly, and sometimes can show significantly lower than the swollen area.

Can he do it at home?

Yes - if he has a medical degree and the required surgical equipment - otherwise no.

I would definitely x-ray or sonar scan first before trying to drain it - usually advisable to see what structures are involved before sticking a needle in.

I was wondering the same thing. I went OTB on a DH track last week thought I'd got away quite lightly. About 24 hrs later I realised that after landing on my back it was actually my chest ribs to the left of my sternum front and back (but mostly front) that are very painful. It's been about 5 day and coughing is very painful and sneezing is a time to pray to god. I was thinking about going to the doctor but I know they will just prod and poke, not commit & send me off for X-rays. If it is a cracked rib or damaged tissue there isn't anything they can do and I'll be about R1800 worse off for no advice or help & just a 'have a painkiller and rest'. Riding is fine so I figure I'll wait a bit longer. Having 3 small kids I have thrown away a vast sum this year when they are running a low grade temp, hacking and coughing by dragging them off to the doctors only to be told 'it's a virus, nothing we can do, just wait it out and come back if you think it's turning in pneumonia' and then charged R600 a visit and then other R600 if I go back because it might have been turning into pneumonia.  :nuke:
