Why are you being emotional. We are engaging, nobody has flamed you. Disagreeing with your opinion does not make us wrong nor nasty.

 

The whole point of debate is to listen and acknowledge others point of view, and to consider them and perhaps modify your opinion if you feel there is merit in another person’s argument. Just getting into a corner and fighting ferociously doesn’t really help.

So in my mind I break this whole thing down as follows... (Forget about the law for a second)

 

1. Are we saying riding 2+ abreast is right and we should be allowed to do it?

 

If you say yes then what motivates you and the group you are riding with to hold back vehicles on the road doing 60+ as a min on roads with your 25 avg ? Isn't it a little inconsiderate to be that guy/gal? Would you feel the same when you are in a rush/late/have a emergency and have no ability to pass?

 

If you say no why are there so many defending it?

 

2. A hooter or honking is only supposed to be used to avoid a accident (according to law). Would you prefer to get hit or that the vehicle honk to alert you of his presence, if you didn't know, to give you an opportunity to either move or go single file?

 

Don't know about you but I would much rather be honked at than hit by a vehicle (Personal preference)

 

Being arrogant and inconsiderate seem to be a cyclist thing these days. Vehicles have always been this way. Never have I seen groups of people walking on the road and when a car hoots at them they want to "moer" the driver cause how dare he...

We're all cyclists and motorists, keep that in mind. 

 

I noticed first hand yesterday on Liesbeek Parkway, 2 cyclists, one on the shoulder, the other in the middle of the road. Not exaggerating.

 

This perception is different from these 2 riders, to the next 2, to the car sitting behind them. 

 

This would make me think

 

1) don't ride in the middle of the road at 20km/h during peak traffic clearly having a chat

2) we need to share the road, but this is not the way.

3) if that were me, I'd sit behind my mate on this stretch of road

4) is he riding there on purpose that no one tries to pass him?

 

The way these 2 specifically were riding did not allow traffic to flow, which I think is why the law for 2-abreast exists. 

 

The rider in question is a well known cycling figure with his own brand of clothing, social media cycling adventures and clearly not an amateur or beginner, so you wonder how he justifies riding in the middle of the road, when he should know better. 

 

Was he half-right of half-wrong?

A piece of plastic between your legs don't give you the right to be in the middle of the road. Common sense tells me that I would rather be safe than sorry and stay single file where needed and ONLY ride abreast when the yellow lane is 1.5m+ wide. (Also with a lot of caution)

Someone WILL be posting the picture that shows it is actually safer to ride in a group, as the distance a car from behind need to overcome to pass will be less than if the riders were spread out single file behind each other

You know if they all stay single file the vehicle would not even need to leave his lane to pass them?

It is more linked to where there is not a proper shoulder to the road, the people arguing that it is safer to rather ride abreast than in single file.  Me personally prefer to ride single file because although there might be a sufficient shoulder to the road you never know when a rider swerve a bit out

Oh... Misunderstood you. Fully agree. 

 

I am of the opinion though that if you frequent roads that have no shoulder then maybe invest in a MTB

 

Its heavier and will make you a lot stronger for those races where you can ride on the road
