Which wheels to buy

Hi to all.

I recently bought a Silverback Sido 1 2018 mountain bike. I would like to upgrade the wheels to make the bike a bit lighter.

I need some advice on this since I dont have mega bucks to throw at this. I weight between 88-90kgs. I dont really want to spend more than R7k on the wheels but if I must spend a bit more then its not a train smash.

I have heard different opinions ranging from buying complete wheel-sets to building up rims but I need some more advice from my very clever friends on this site.

Please will you guys provide me with some info such as products and reasons why you think they are a good choice.

I also really like the flat spokes a lot so if they can be in the mix it would be great too.

One tip:Think very carefully before buying 2nd hand wheels, guys will knowingly or unknowingly sell you a pair that has reached end of life and it is very difficult to know what condition they are in.

In terms of wheel options in that price range I can tell you that I am also looking around and my top 3 options are:

American Classic Wide lightings

Lyne Pulse

Custom build from NickTheWheelbuilder on this site.

Each option has its pros and cons. Fortunately my budget has not allowed me to buy something yet as I am still undecided.

A great set and cheap the am28 of America classic they are light 1650g per set and run the top end hub's of America classic they are around R4000 or i would go for the Lyne pulse 25mm inside very light +-1500g per set cost around R5500. Both of these have a 90kg+ weight limit so should be perfect.

Hi guys thanks so far for the great replies. I was also looking at the rapid today. I can get a set for not too bad price. All have a look at all of the other brands too but if you giys say i can get a set of the Lyne pulse at round about 1500g then that would be better than the rapide at 1680g.

Please keep suggestions coming please

Lyne has a very good reputation on the Hub so if you are after weight saving I would buy a set in a heartbeat.

I personally have a front wheel with a Rapide rim, can't comment on the weight but it's super strong and runs like a dream!!!

PS. Do you need new wheels or are you merely after saving a few grams?

If it's only a weight thing can't you save a bit more for the same money by changing the cockpit, tyres and crankset?

Edit: For instance from a quick Google I see that you have an Alloy seatpost which I reckon will be fairly heavy. For sub R1k you can get a Thomson Elite seatpost (from CRC) which weights about 188grams and for another R800.00 you can get a Rapide Carbon bar which comes in at sub 200grams again.

I would go the custom wheel route.

On my 26" mtb I had AM Classic hubs laced to DT Swiss rims. The rims were very good value for weight (lack there of). The wheels were spoked with Wheelsmith Double butted spokes. These wheels cost about 50% of off the shelf wheels at the same weight.

Hi, I only just recently bought the bike so dont need new wheels per say, the idea for me is to save a bit of weight but still keep the strength.

I have also been thinking of changing the seat post. I looked at the KCNC Ti Pro Light Scandium. Apparently better than carbon. Also good price class.

I will definitely have a look at the one you suggested.

Thanks for the help and you time

Thank for the reply. I also like the idea of going with custom wheels. I like the fact that I can change things up my adding my own touches to the rims. I might go with that idea. Just need to do my homework well before if fork out the cash.

thanks

Lyne Pulse for sure if you're after the weight savings. I have Rapide 30mm's on my hard tail and I absolutely love them, but they are a fair bit heavier than the Lyne 25mm's.

I would second the AM wheels.  I got my set new for R3500, couple of months ago.

Great investment.

I am no weight weenie, but the one way I would go if I want to save some weight is to upgrade my fork.  I would upgrade my Rockshox Recon to a Reba.

I can't comment on the best way to save weight, this is only my opinion and what I would do.

Carbon is not weak by any measure. It also comes with a few perks like vibration absorption etc.

Some time ago I built an alu frame SS roadbike to sub 7kg's without breaking the bank.

If you are going the weight weeny route the best advice I can give you is to strip the bike, and weigh each part individually. This will allow you to choose where to save weight for the best bang for your buck.

Ive been riding Rapide for over a year. They have been bulletproof so far.

I am also interested in these wheels. Are the hubs silent or do they sing ?

Any chance of a video upload of the hub and wheels ? (Please)

Hi. Also interested in the Rapide wheels. If I don't get a new bike by year end I will upgrade my current wheels and maybe my fork.

Keep us updated on what you decide.
