Stumpy, Anthem Advanced or Camber Comp?

Hi

So, my wife has lost her marbles and suggested that I get a new Mountain Bike, to replace my 2014 Anthem X. I pretty much ride like a South African, long rides, as much single track as I can get, but nothing too dramatic.

I was in the shop today wanting to look at the Anthem Advanced 29er and the Camber Comp Carbon 29er, but the salesman suggested I consider the Stumpjumper 29 inch. According to him, it will be suitable for XC, XCM and Enduro. I am not so sure, but he has got me thinking. Unfortunately, testing bikes over here is not a service that shops offer, so I am unable to take one on to the trails.

Wondering what the Hub thinks of the three options. Northern Ireland has zero XCM type events, although Enduro is pretty big and XC is growing. I would still like the ability to do long rides and to travel to stage races etc in Europe/US/SA.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

From the sounds of it, the Stumpjumper ST should suit you well. If your tyres(especially the rear) are fast rolling enough, then you'll be fine on a long ride. The slight weight penalty is definitely outweighed by the comfort benefit.

Stumpy ST (takes the place of the Camber). It's the perfect all rounder for SA. Can he dressed up for anything from XC to Enduro, and will do all of it well. It's as close as you'll get to a one bike to do it all bike. Only thing is that the spec sucks for the price.

Another, in my opinion, probably better option wrt value is the new 29" Giant Trance.

+1 for the Trance 29.

Regarding the ST, apparently the only difference in the frames between the regular SJ and ST version is 1) the shock stroke and 2) the yoke length.

Edit: *besides the build kit if course.

I see them as follows:

Anthem is a 90mm travel XC race bike

Stumpy ST is 130mm all day every day bike

Stumpjumper is 150mm travel trail to enduro bike

I used to have an Anthem. Really liked it.

It was stolen and I had the opportunity to try something else, so went for a Camber. LOVE that bike!

If I was looking to buy a new bike to cover local rides (Table Mountain, Tokai etc) and the odd stage race, I would look at the Trek Fuel EX, Stumpy ST or Giant Trance.

But then if you get me thinking, that list grows very quickly, and I make myself feel better by thinking that I am lucky that I don't have a problem where I have money and don't know how to spend it

Stumpy. If you can a 6fattie (+27.5) and then you can swap out with 29ers to lighten the load for race mode. Although I still race with the fattie wheels :)

Yup, that is right. Also the same story with the previous Camber and SJ.

Yup, Stumpy Short Travel takes it's place. A bit more of a fitting name as a Camber was just a short travel Stumjumper anyway.

Thank you -reading up to try and learn a bit more

Living in Northern Ireland you have to consider mud clearance.

What are the local riders favoring?

Have you considered something like the Orange Stage 4 with 120/110 mm travel front rear? Single pivot design with loads of tyre clearance so you can fit anything from a 1.95 to a 2.4 with ample space for mud to clear the stays.

If you want to stick to the three options you listed then the Giant Trance 29 is probably where you want to be

Stumpy and camber share the same frame front triangle. Stumpy is more Enduro, and the Camber is more of a jack of all trades as far as XCM, XCO, Enduro is concerned. I ride a camber, and it is equally at home riding technical ST as it is riding an all day marathon ride on gravel.

Sorry for the hijack, but I have a 2015 Anthem 29er. Was you're a 29er too? I'm thinking of upgrading... How do you find the climbing efficiency of the Camber in comparison?
