Ordered 31 Okt 2018

Delivered to New York via US Postal Service: 6 Nov

Arrived in Jhb: 9 Nov

Finally out of customs: 26 November  :cursing:

I hoped this Aramex route would make the customs process quicker but it is still frustratingly slow.

Now awaiting the final hop from Jhb to Pta.

Package delivered in my hands on 29 Nov. So total time that Aramex spent with the parcel under their control was only 6 days from NY to my home in Pretoria, flippen impressive for R200 in shipping.

Customs on the other hand, flip.

Interestingly got this via email yesterday, thought it would be good for everyone to know:

We would like to inform you of a recent change in the customs clearance process for low value import shipments.

Currently, a single shipment valued under R 500 (ZAR) is considered a low value import shipment and does not require formal customs clearance or incur custom duties.

It has come to our attention that multiple shipments, under different waybills but received on the same date, import manifest and flight, are combined by SARS for the purpose of assessing the total value of importation into South Africa.

The value of each shipment is converted from the original currency to assess the total value. In the event the total value of the combined shipments is more than R 500 (ZAR), then the shipments have to go through a formal customs clearance process with SARS.

A typical example of this enforcement of multiple shipments received for the same importer on the same date and import manifest and flight is as follows:

Shipment 1: R 250 (ZAR)
  Shipment 2: R 300 (ZAR)

Total Value: R 550 (ZAR)

Based on the above example, SARS will require the shipments to go through a formal customs clearance process. Custom duties calculated based on the product description, and customs VAT at a rate of 15% will be applicable.

Think Black Friday has overloaded customs.

I've used Aramex Global shopper on a number of occasions and currently have a package on the way with them and it's been super slow. Been sitting with customs since Monday and still hasn't been cleared...

My item was a very low value item, R300 in total, thus under the R500 threshold, still they asked for some sort of additional proof 2 times, with each reply taking 4 days to be responded to.

Illogical to do it for such low value items. SARS probably needs every cent it can get, thus they are much more fussy before letting something pass through.

Yea also got that email as I've also ended up just saying F-it and re-ordered some small bits that would seem to have gone to SAPO Never-neverland so the race is on between my new order from China to NY to my door with Aramex (Ordered 21 Nov) vs the China to where ever :whistling:  (Ordered 9 Jul).

Kinda shipping related... but also AliExpress seller related.

Super keen to purchase a very nice GPS running watch from AliExpress. Done my research and know what I want. I found a seller that offered DHL shipping for $32 which seemed pretty reasonable (9-22 days shipping). The seller also had other products which I wanted, like screen protectors and a "case" that clips over the watchface to protect it. For these items, the seller didn't offer DHL shipping, only free "AliExpress Standard Shipping", which means anything from 2 months to 6 months. So I asked the seller, obviously trying to translate English into Engrish, that he/she must please just take the small items I'm taking and box them up with the watch and send it all DHL. The small items wouldn't add 30 grams and fit in the palm of your hand... here's the convo... read from the bottom up.

Hello anyone there? Can you bundle multiple items together?

18/11/25 23:08

So, after the sellers final message they go and block me, I can't talk to them any further. And now there aren't any other sellers that have all the items I want in one shop. UGH! And... it will take up to 20 days to get my refund.

I spoke to AliExpress customers services about this and they were most helpful, even saying "don't worry sir we will punish the seller for treating you like this".

Question.... Is EMS shipping worth it or will it still get stuck in JHB for weeks/months? Dis EMS expedite the process at all?

Ems used to be amazing, almost as fast as Aramex but much cheaper, now its terrible and often not much faster than airmail, aka months, the last step of Ems is via the Post Office so you can deduce where the roadblock is..

Ems out going is still great though, well that was me sending an item from the Western Cape to Sweden.

The issue with trying to do that is often Chinese sellers are pseudo drop shippers, they may be sending the different parts from different suppliers/warehouses which is why you will often find they will split orders into multiple packages for no apparent reason and if you paid for fast shipping some parts will get send on the slow boat.

I wanted to send my package to the Aramex DropBox in China, and wait for it, Aliexpress does not ship to China . So selected the Thailand Aramex Dropbox as it seemed close enough.

No way I am letting an international parcel enter the SAPO system again,

One thing I am wondering is how the frick I am going to sort out any customs issues as the package enters Thailand as it is not yet under control of Aramex to do the admin for me.

We'll wait and see.

Yea go figure had the same thing on Amazon and Ebay as well so just ended picking the states as it had free shipping options and think their postal/customs system is far quicker than SAPO even on a crap day

Have tried 17.net as previously suggested. All mine shows no update since leaving country of origin.

Just a big orange triangle next to South Africa (Service Error)

Its because the call to the SAPO API is timing out at the moment.

I was just checking a shipment and had the same thing, so went to the SAPO site, it's slow as heck right now.

Give it a bit of time and it should start showing information again, the servers are probably just overloaded at the moment.

Been like that for at least 2 weeks. My concern is that my packages will just end up being sent back to sender, seeing as I'm going on leave from the long weekend till second week of Jan.

Might miss my first (final) notice to collect.

Well guess this is Murphy's law at its best.

Just got one of my parcels that was ordered on 9 Jul although the other one is still MIA so at lease I can now fit the rear wheel and go for long wheelies <_<

Let's see who will claim 2nd place :whistling:
