In my experience it's a unanimous vote from many unrelated sources that Trek is the leader by a long shot in the bicycle industry when it comes to their carbon fibre technology. .... but as far as carbon fibre technology goes Trek leads the way. Their carbon weaving/bonding process has been explained to me (by a Trek rep) in relation to other manufacturers' carbon bonding processes and it makes perfect logical sense why the process Trek uses is superior to other manufacturers' processes.

I disagree with "Industry leader by a long shot". Simple question: How much did the 2003 top of the range Trek weigh? The Scott CR1 entered the market then, at 860 grams. It also beat all frames, including metal ones, in the EFBE fatigue tests that year. Im not saying Scott is the industry leader, but Trek is definately not a long way ahead of everybody else. IMO the top guys are Stork, Cervelo, Trek, Specialized, Giant, Scott, but the difference is small.

Secondly, you cant take anything a rep says too seriously. Also not the local importers who post on the hub like Look, BH, Pinarello etc. Obviously these guys will push their own product.

Thirdly, TCS wont sat bad things about Cannondale, BPM wont say bad things about Trek, MTN about Raleigh, so comments from these quarters should be taken in that light.

Strange before joining The Hub I always thought trek made very decent frames.

Did not take very long to realize that brands like Trek,Merida and Raleigh is frowned upon here and not considered cool.

I am in the market for a new bike and must admit I am very interested in buying a Trek madone 5.5 at Solomons. Looks like a very nice bike.

Agreed - you would need to back up a big statement like that with a few references to these "unrelated sources".  Bike warranties are not an indicator of anything other than a calculated risk by the marketing department.  The reason Trek gives a lifetime warranty is that it makes it easier for bike shops to sell their frames, they also only retail their frames through your LBS.  The bikes on online websites are not in teh official Trek dealer network.  These two marketing ploys mean the bike shops is encouraged to punt Trek.  I'm not saying its a bad thing, just see it for what it is.

The truth is most high-end frames are excellent quality - far superior to the handbuilt frames of old.  The tests referred to are indicators of slight differences, but for the most part the difference between a Giant TCR Composite frame and a Trek SSSSSSLx is about R20k and perhaps a few grams.  The biggest difference that you will feel is in the geometry and depending on what suits your style of riding how relatively comfortable (and therefore fun and fast) the bike is.

Now that I would recommend.  If you are going to buy Cannondale or Trek, get the model from a year or two ago.  They are usually excellent value.  The 'Dale alu frames for example are exceptionally good value.

I ride a Trek 6500 mtb and in my opinion, one of the lightest aluminium Mtb frames.  Why I ride it?  Because I like it.  Why do you ride something different?  Because you like it.  Taste differs from person to person.  I like riding bikes that you don't commonly see out there.  That is why I had a Legera carbon compact road bike as well CoolBacklash2008-06-20 01:06:18

Just because a bike is built in the East does not mean that it is inferior in quality in any away from any other bike that is build in the USA , Italy or wherever else in the world.

Although a bike is built in the East the design and quality control is governed by the manufacturer. It is purely from a financial perspective that most manufacturers choose to have their bikes built in the East, thereby enabling them to sell their products cheaper than their competitors in Western and European countries.

By the way I ride an Eddymerckx, and have a great ride on it. For my type of riding I don't need a frame that costs an extra 15K for a more "comfortable" ride. I would probably not even know the difference if I was riding a merckx or trek with a blindfold on. If I ever buy another bike I will definitely be buying another Merckx

Loved my Trek when I had it. Ride was responsive... felt good, went from a steel frame, no not aluminium, steel, to the Trek, and man oh man the difference. wow. The gave that bike to my dad, only fair, he bought all my others, and i picked up my Specialized.

Dad put some damage in to the frame, sent it in for repair, got a loaner from Trek while in for repairs, and now you cannot even see where the repairs were done.. Still a great frame.

A guy I peddle with used to have the some model Trek and also loved it.

I have personally seen Gary from Just Fun Cycling (Trek Agents) going out of his way (after office hours) to sort out a loan part for a customer that had a problem.

I have seen him replace an older generation frame with a newer generation frame (and a beter spec) due to a warranty claim, no problems!

Soon, only custom build & boutique brands will not be made in the East. Colnago is the last big Italian brand still made in Italy, but the new 09 top of the range model will be made in Taiwan.

Very soon the argument will be Taiwan vs China vs Korea vs Malysia etc.
