ANTHEM 29 2 (NX EAGLE) 2018 vs Scalpel SI 5 2018

Good Afternoon fellow riders.

So I've been scouring the threads to find a comparison of the above mentioned bikes.

My predicament is that while I'm a 1.85m tall guy, my leg length is such that I have to get an XL frame - which somewhat limits my options.

After contacting various bike shops with my 35-40k budget and XL requirement, it has been narrowed down to an out of the box Giant Anthem 29 2 (NX Eagle), or a built up Scalpel SI 5 with Carbon Lefty - both 2018 models. (significantly cheaper than 2019)

I'm built like a rugby player, 100kg, maybe 95kg racing fit - and this shows on the amount of repairs required on my current 2015 Scott Spark 940.

Was hoping theres some other guys here with the same predicament - looking for a bike that can take a hammering, not needing a drive train replacement every year due to high watt output. My planned use is mostly longer 60km and stage races.

Which would you choose?

Anthem, seems I am build like you and had three over the last nine years. Only had a frame crack, on a 2010 model. Had shimano XT on all of them with no issues. If you go Stans wheelset I would not recommend anything less than the Flow

Hi Jacques

For the money i'll go for a Anthem with NX eagle upgrade.

I currently own a new Anthem and I've owned a lefty prior to that (I weighed well over 100kg then).

The Anthem should have better parts as standard and cheaper to maintain (especially the fork).

What parts are on the Si5?

Thanks Tjop. Cannondale does Shimano and the Giant has mostly SRAM. I get mixed reviews on the two though Shimano seems to be more reliable. Same with the Lefty - lots of guys swear by it for its increased sturdiness, while others say it needs repairs all the time. Here is the two links.

Looking again at the quote - the Giant is actually the new 2019 model.

Can't go wrong with a Giant IMO. Great bikes and no real "proprietary" parts on it which may incur higher than usual service and maintenance costs

Genuine question.

What does a service of a "normal" fork cost if a Lefty's cost R1000?

This choice for me is like an Alfa Romeo vs Toyota.

Cannondale is lovely to look at and probably rides really well, but the Giant is a workhorse, and you can't really go wrong.

My 2c

Over the years have owned both - Giant and Cannondale.

I would go for the Cannondale.

But having said that is it not possible to get a ride on both - you may be surprised, sometimes having made up your mind or having been told which bike to get and once you ride both you may change your mind.

I would go for the Cannondale.

The lefty is amazing and doesnt need any more maintenance than a regular fork.

The NX range is bottom of the line on the Anthem whereas the Cannondale comes with GX.

At the end of the day, the best is to test ride both and decide what suits you better

Dale would be XT.

Better than NX IMO
