@Odi - i have a question, just curious - have you ever been in a situation , especially when traveling where you're at a restaurant and there's simply NOTHING vegetarian on offer, except maybe chips and you're not even sure that's vegan. How do you deal?

I'm a very non fussy vegetarian but I remember years back in Argentina it was down right impossible to get food that wasn't a garnish to eat and when you're staying in a hostel type setup without access to a kitchen you're kinda stuck.

Good question. I can honestly say that I haven't been in situation recently where I was faced with a lettuce salad as my only meal option. Reason being that before travelling, I'll (or my wife) usually check for vegan or vegan friendly options in the area I'll be travelling in. However, that doesn't always pan out, so if push comes to shove, I'll try and construct something off of the menu.

If I know I'm going somewhere where there'll not be anything to eat, I'll grab a bite before leaving the house and then just order whatever I can, just not to make it (too) awkward for the rest of the dinner/lunch guests.

As a vegan you'll be faced with such a situation at some point and then you just do what you can. Personally, animals are always off my plate, so I'll never compromise and have a cheese sandwich or creamy pasta or whatever. I won't undermine my ethics just for one meal. If you're plant-based for health or whatever other reasons, then it's a personal choice what to do in such a situation.

And if you found yourself on an island like Tom Hanks did?

Thanks for that. I was googling options in Croatia and this made me think of how hard it must be, if even as a vegetarian it's tough.

The term 'vegan Croatia” might seem like an oxymoron at first.

small towns in argentina was tough, and I found China/Hong Kong tough though there was the odd place run by monks that had proper stuff, even in Chinese restaurants - the use of chicken stock, fish paste, oyster sauce in vegetarian food etc - it's a mine field!
