hi guys please help me out. what are your thoughts on this bike

Full suspension 29 er. Excellent condition, Shimano Deore shifters with XT derailer. 10 speed.Large frame size. Maxxis front and rear tyres, 90% life left. Recently had full service.

It all depends on the price...

I wouldn't be wild about the Deore shifters but hey, I prefer 1 x anyway...

If you get it at a good price and the drivetrain and suspension are confirmed to be solid AND it fits with what you are looking for go for it.

BTW recent full service isnt proof of life.....an informed Inspection and riding it will determine that.

It's an Anthem, whick is the donkey of SA stage race bikes and they're often treated as such. Budget 5k to get it running properly. You may not need all of it, but set it aside anyway.

Parts wise - the wheels are heavy, the rest, while not top end, is pretty bombproof aside from the fork which may have damper issues down the line. Also the RD isn't a clutch type, which helps control chain slap and will be necessary if you decide to go 1x later on.

As love2fly said - depends on the price.

I would take it at 12k - the rabbit hole is quite a tricky one, the moment you decide to shop around you end up finding lots and lots of other bikes just slightly more expensive than the previous one and before you know it you sit at R22k.

My advice: If you like the colors of the frame and you like the brand then take it, everything else on the bike can be upgraded and or changed. Yes, it may cost you some more money down the line but I view cycling and a bike as a whole as a consumable. Everything will eventually have to be replaced / serviced at one point or another whether you paid 12 or 120k for the bike.

The better you maintain your bike the longer things will last and I'm sure you've not entered the cycling ring hoping that you never have to spend any additional cash on your ride  :whistling:

That's a 2013 Giant Anthem x29 3... I have one

It looks in good condition , with original parts except for the tyres and saddle ( it originally came with Racing Ralphs)

Great Bike!!! the only problems are:

  • OD2 Headset and fork - not a train-smash but more difficult if you want to play with the Stem length or if you want to sell the fork
  • Anthems are know for frame cracks on the top-tube, near the seat tube. Giant are VERY good with the warranties, but they only apply to the original Owner. if you weigh more that 90kg don't even think about buying a 2nd hand Anthem (that said I weigh 103kg and my frame is still going strong)
  • No Internal cable routing

R12000 is a bargain!

I changed the Breaks

on the cracks near seatpost is mostly caused by the seatpost being out very far.

Eh... they say that, but I've seen a few that happened at a reasonable extension. Usually on L and XL.

OP - just make sure fork stanchions are in good nick and you're golden.
