Suikerbossie traffic lights & general road safety

I think as cyclists we should also air on the side of caution. Quite honestly, anyone who approaches an intersection at speed, irrespective of the colour of the traffic light, is a potential accident waiting to happen.

Agree, treat ANY traffic light as a potential hazard (both with the bike and vehicle), because there are some drivers (intentionally or accidentally) that might run the red light.  Yes they were wrong, but that does not reduce your injuries

You would hope that the driver from the other side is not driving a Tesla with some serious acceleration and that his reaction time gives you sufficient time to get over the line.  Else if you approaching a light you need to slow down so that you can make a safe stop before the line in the event the light changes.

For example my approach both the car and the bike, as I approach a traffic light I put a mental line in the road, whereas if the light changes before I get to the line I stop no matter what (ideally not with someone close to the backside of my car), if over the line I don't stop.  The again, I think that ANY intersection you need to be careful as someone might miss the red and drive straight across without stopping

The Suikerbosie one has a push covering the drivers line of site, its terrible. Honestly as a cyclist, I and I suggest everyone else treats every intersection as a stop street regardless if its one or not. Had a lady in a polo breeze through a stop street and all she did was raise her hand at me ?????

After I got taken out by a car at an intersection on Sea Point Beach Road a few weeks ago, I can only echo others and advise extra caution when approaching all intersections. It doesn't matter if the light is green and you have right of way (as was the case for me).  Sometimes motorists simply don't see you (negligently or not)...or else they completely underestimate your speed. Even though the motorist is culpable and wrong in the eyes of the law, you the cyclist will land up in hospital.

I wonder about the road traffic engineering and policy guidelines for installing traffic lights on a long downhill stretch of road like that. Edinburgh drive has various intersections but its hardly as long as Suikerbossie. Seems like a really bad idea to me.

it does have a 60km/hr speed limit so that should be an alarm bell.

Edinburgh also is 60km/hr with more gradient
