Safety on the roads ... and cyclists behaviour...

Commuted this morning and was struck by how many drivers were friendly and courteous to me - things like letting me cross the intersection first even though they arrived ahead of me. Making space for me when stopping at a robot, only passing when it was safe etc.

Mornings like this I'm convinced the whole motorists vs cyclists divide is greatly exaggerated... (until I get on thehub at least)

But the one thing I noticed again was how many drivers in traffic are on their phones!! It is CLEARLY sociably acceptable for a large portion of drivers to do this and the peeps calling them out on this are considered the $%^holes. I have no idea how this is problem is going to get fixed but I'm certain a great number of motorists and cyclists are going to die before it is.

Never argued the fact that it is a limit and not a recommendation, so not sure why I should go and check my book again. The general behavior of most of our population is testament to the fact that it is actually a recommendation, as most people tend to do more than the recommended speed limit at any given time. Taxis, Soccer moms in Fortuners, they all do this.

Snip

The book says that you should drive slower when road conditions demand it.

So there is no need  for signs, as YOU should look at the blind rise and say to yourself "what if"

Same with new road rules, it is your responsibility to find out and familiarise yourself with all new rules and that is what irritates me about motorists that uses the excuse "i did not know"

And like I said before, we are not discussing what people normally do like your reference to soccer moms. We are talking about what is the road rule and what is not. Just because someone does something does not make it ok / recommended etc.

I disagree, if more people were to say something it will become socially unacceptable

Say something if you see someone using a disabled bay, or the Mom’s parking.

Say something if someone next to you at the traffic light is texting.

Say something if you see a cyclist skip a red light or stop

Say something if you know about a dodge area for running or cycling

Do you honestly believe that a few of us here on the Hub by saying something can change the behavior of thousands if not hundreds of thousands? People today just don't give a f...k about what Piet Pompies and the rest have to say.

Yes, by all means, say something but you are not being realistic if you think that is going to change peoples behavior.

The cynic in me thinks you are just pissing into the wind because the battle for it to be socially unacceptable is long lost.

Only way to change this is lots of big fines and confiscated phones. Until then expect many more road deaths

I assume you are refering to the drivers on their phones?

Cause those are the real d00ses around, for a motorist and as a motorist I get more gatvol when someone is on their phone and I am stuck behind them at a red light and then when they eventually go I get stopped by the light going red again RATHER than having to slow down behind a cyclist or tractor to Learner driver.....

Actually, my post was not referring to those in particular. Using your phone while driving is illegal. I was responding to another poster's comment that he can do anything he likes as long as it is within the law. To be honest that is a really shite attitude. It is actually a very common South African attitude. Everyone for himself.

I dont subscribe to the "well I can join them since I can not change them"

I am going to try even just to make ME feel better that I tried to prevent and accident or someone getting killed. If I hoot at and texting driver and he puts his/her phone down or maybe they just think about it I might have prevented someone getting hurt.

Well generally if you do what you want WITHIN the law, then there is a GOOD chance that you will not be irritating anyone else......

Can you tell me why that is a bad attitude? Do what you want within the law? What action that is within the LAW will be detrimental to other people?

I didn't forget, I just left out the Christian icon purposely (Mother Theresa almost made it to the list too) to avoid unnecessary distractions like this, so now you're making me underestimate your intelligence regardless. Looking at your former and latter posts, I just realised you can't be taken seriously, so thanks but no thanks, good day subterranean sir.

You do know what they say about sarcasm. I'll leave it at that.

Your previous post made it look like you do.

I dont need to change thousand people, I can start by changing the behaviour of my family and friends. Then you do the same and soon we have a 100 doing to same....

I ask about 3 moms on my commute each morning to stop using their phones as my kids ride on the road and would hate for them to murder them. They look a little upset but put the phone down.

I ride past 4 schools on way to work, hence why so many moms. Yes it does add 7km to my 12km route.
