Can it be done? Cape Town to Knysna on a Road Bike, avoiding the N2

We did not end up doing that route. We just did a 301km ride in one day instead. 

 

I would aim. 

 

CT - Robertson

Robertson - Ladiesmith 

Ladiesmith - George

George to Knysna (easy day)

Without having done something similar before, how do you get a feel for realistic daily distances, sustainable for 3 days?

Have done 3 and 4 day back to back rides. So one we did was Claremont to Veldrif and back, 200km there and 175km back the next day. 200km was chilled as we started early and had a tail wind. 175km was tougher with head wind and starting at 8am. Aim for around 7 hours on the bike each day I would say. My folks rode from London to the Pyrenes and back, they did 135km a day and are 65 years old and stopped off for lots of wine and photos along the way, so if they can cruise 135km I am sure most could do 150+ per day easily. 

 

They did about 8 days riding there, then followed TDF for 7 days then 9 days back. lots of Air BNB and a few bike shops along the way.

get up on saturday am do cape point -chappies- camps bay -cape town and back home -then get up sunday and do it again ...wear the backpack that you will be using to carry your crap on the trip ....take a brick with :whistling:

Hehe...FANTASTIC!!...that being said I did my first 100miler(162k) in July this year and that was on my Axis 90 with a 32 chain ring and a 7spd cassette(yes I "made" it into a 1x7..LOL...and V brakes hard tail...2629 m total elevation gain and almost all jeep track and single track and gravel roads...and I KAKKED off...13 hours in the saddle....Sooo..HUGE respect to your toppies....BUT ..Ive learnt so much since then and of course now I have my FS TREK...

So taking a road bike on gravel is not out of the question. Tick. Thanks bikebloke.

But which way?

Cycling out of the CT Southern Suburbs looks like it should be avoided (too many dodgy sections, people and cars) so I'm probably looking at a Stellenbosch start (unless someone can convince me otherwise?).

The back of Franschoek looks like quite a start but unavoidable.

The Boland looks pretty dull.

And then things will get interesting. But which way?

I've done the beach road from Muizenberg to Stellies (yes past Strandfonetein, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha) but I was part of a group and we had two support vehicles. It was pretty awesome though a few people stopped to wave and we obviously drew lots of attention and at no point did we feel intimidated.

I think I have met your folks after a Rosmead incident of mine. They look like they could give me a run for my money!

Ja, probably on my own. I think it would be pretty risky to do that route alone. Maybe I just spend too much time in the Southern Suburbs.

Our club (City Cycling Club) used this route, and variations, a few times as an annual mid-year tour event over a week. We initially did it as a MTB event, starting in Sedgefield, and then a road event. The last road tour we did was along the length of the R62 over 7 days, which we called the Tour De Route 62, which was as follows: Stormsriver - Joubertina - Herold - Oudtshoorn - Caltizdorp - Barrydale - Worcester - Slanghoek - Bainskloof - Wellington - Cape Town (Edgemead). We had our support Kombi with, for the drive up from Cape Town to the start point (Sedgefield etc), and pre-organised the stop overs at various B&B's. The one year we had no-one to drive the Kombi, so we took turns every hour or so to drive ! :D

 

I would say that your best route option would be heading out via Northern Suburbs: one way to get going out the Southern Suburbs is via Palmyra - Rondebosch - Ob's - Salt River - Woodstock - bike path through Paarden Eiland (or into town and then back on the highway shoulder to Paarden Eiland if not with a significant number of riders) - Milnerton - Bosmansdam Road (or through Sandrif) - Bothasig bike path through to Burgundy Estate - up and over Tiekiedraai into Durbanville. From there, there are several routes further North avoiding the highways, each with their issues and safety concerns, especially if riding alone. Just an idea .....

N2 from Buffelsjags to Mossel Bay has some seriously skinny little yellow line bits, but they are short and irregular. Getting through Mossel Bay is a complete mare, but you have to, the lovely double carriageway is a freeway.

 

I got lucky with a light tailwind on day one (it is only 285km-ish, I went to the top of Tradouw to make the 300. Shoot me.). Day two, less so. Stilbaai turnoff to Mossel Bay, into a headwind, was less than fun. But all doable.

 

WRT the N9 south out of Oudtshoorn - madness. It is hairy in a car, there is no shoulder whatsoever and a mix of big trucks and 'commuters' late for stuff either end, racing. There is a great gravel road from Oudtshoorn to the back of Montagu Pass, which is probably road doable with 28s, and very definitely an absolute blast on a gravel bike, if you do want to go that way. Or, head via Robinson Pass down to Mossel Bay, if you are coming from Oudtshoorn side - narrow, but far less traffic. And spectacular.

All I'm getting out of this thread is a deeper disdain for JHB....

 

That route from CPT to Knysna looks like a blast. Have to hit Wilderness though, absolute gem.

 

The last time I was visiting my gran in George there seemed to be a gravel / dirt road that crossed the mountain, maybe consider that if you're doing it on a mtb? Looked like an awesome drive/ride.

We have done the Route 62 in cars, bakkies and motorcycles over the last 3 decades ....

 

LOVE this route !!

 

Your home to Stellenbosch via whichever route you prefer.

Helshoogte, Franschoek, Villiersdorp.

Head towards Worcester, but take the turn to Robertson, Ashton.

 

Now have a choise to make .... well not really if you want none of the N2.

 

1) From Ashton go to Swellendam, then a short section to Buffelsjag.  Then the Tradoupass to Barrydale.  (this section of the N2 is short enough, with a descent shoulder ... but LOTS of traffic .... not that the R62 is empty either ...)

2) From Ashton to Montague, then R62 to Barrydale.

 

To keep the N2 to a minimum you may want to make a slight detour via Oudtshoorn ... then the homestretch to Sedgefield ....

 

 

Weather ... very unpredictable in summer ... we have had non stop rain on 16 December while doing 9 passes on motorcycles.  Wind is always a possibility ....   Being summer the wind may well be your friend, as it gets HOT when the wind dies down ...

Yup.

 

Mossel Bay to George is a freeway, so you have to bypass through M Bay and up over the old road past the airport into George, which is a k*k ride to start but lekker to finish. That is the only bit that we aren't allowed on, once you have left Somerset West.
