SUV for 300k budget

then decide what other creature comforts you have to have and what’s nice to have

 

At 300k can you afford to service it out of pocket or is a plan a must have.

 

There are some really nice SUVs at 300k if you are willing to go for something older, but you will need to decide if your budget can handle services and maintenance.

 

I’ve sold a couple of XC60s this month under 300k, but they are out of plan.

With a bit of searching you could probably get one with a year or two left on the plan within your budget.

My requirements are: Weekday city runner - medium to light on fuel, enough ground clearance for comfortable gravel road driving, would be used to transport two or three mountain bikes on weekends with a bike rack / roof rack, bluetooth with a decent sound system.

 

Does not need to be 4x4.

You can get a new Toyota Rush for R300k.

 

Also, you can get an extended mechanical warranty on a secondhand vehicle, so just make sure the general condition is great and the mileage not too high. It will cover most of the expensive parts such as gearbox, clutch, engine etc.

 

How do you go about the extended mech warranty? Is it with the manufacturer or with a 3rd party? Apparently you need to extend the warranty before it is more than a year old?

I would have suggested a Mitsubishi ASX, but it seems that between my wife and I we get 8-10km/L. The 2L petrol is fun to drive though, so someone with a less enthusiastic driving style might get better fuel consumption.

It is a joy on gravel roads (more stable than my Ranger on most gravel roads.)

And the GLX comes with a Rockford Fosgate sound system.

So there are two ways to look at this, Im currently in the same situation so I have been looking.

 

1-2 year old lesser spec vehicle with warranty. i.e Duster/Kuga/Tucson etc 

Older vehicle with higher spec/quality and no warranty i.e Fortuner/Discover etc.

Personally Im leaning towards the Fortuner myself but in second is the Tucson.

 

Its a tough call to make with most of them. Like the Duster, its a nice car but its still a Dacia and so its hard to find a tangible value in it.

The Mahindra brand has really upped their game, their service plans runs up to 150000kms, depending if you have a dealership in the area, I would definitely have a look at them. We own 2 x 2.2L diesel 2017 models, one dc and one sc. Light on fuel, very well specced and pulls like mad. 6 speed manual gearbox on the bakkies that we have and so far very happy with them. Service intervals is 30000kms after the first run-in 10000km service.

Honda CR-V. Better quality than all the afore mentioned options and ticks all you boxes. Buy an older one and invest 100k.

Fortuner is ok if you dont mind the ride quality of a double cab, interior of an early 90s Toyota and the adrenaline rush of not knowing if its going to be taken from you at gun point or liberated from a parking lot.

Disco in that price range I would not touch unless you have an appetite for potentially large repair bills.

You may be lucky and get  a good one, if you do you'll be very happy with it, but in that price range the chances of finding a good one are small.

Nothing I have stated is untrue.

 

Even the "New" Fortuner has a dated looking cabin. Some people like that though.

 

Then look at the stats that come out all the time regarding theft and hijacking, Fortuner is always near the top of the list.

Thats not to say it WILL get stolen, just that the probability is much higher than with other vehicles in its class.
