What remarkable airman-ship! I wonder if they could have pulled that off with "modern" technology in the cockpit?

 

Excellant flying.  But to answer your question it is difficult.  I know Airbus for many years have been working on the flight computer software that should control be lost due to whatever reason, the flight computer could compensate with the available control services to compensate.  But at the end of the day it is like a seatbelt in a car.  You will always have a scenario where not wearing a seatbelt could actually safe your life but for majority of incidents the seatbelt is crucial.  I think with fly-by-wire it is similar.   Same as the 767 that ran our of fuel.  The pilots had to glide to a landing on deserted runway. The came in too fast and the runway was short.  The captain was a glider pilot and he pulled a manouvre they do with gliders to reduce speed.  He did the same and managed to do an emergency landing and all survived.
