We used to do their planes but the contract ended on 31st December 2019. I am not sure who they use now(possibly the KLM guys?) but my guess would be they only have one technician at CPT with basic tools etc and in JNB there will be a few more guys with more tools available to them. So if they were able to establish the problem in the air and realised the CPT guy was not able to fix it and the JNB guys are then they would divert. I reckon had we still been doing their planes, they would have done the exact same thing.

Maybe Joburg (SAAT) is better equipped to repair the aircraft, I imagine they might need to put it in a hangar to “swing the gear”

Just guessing tho

Our contract with them ended 4 days ago but whoever they use now would probably rent some space from us to do the work. I'll go down to the hangers just now and see if the aircraft is here.

I would assume that JHB is better equiped and also to fly in spares you would have more possibilities.  Also normally the "heavies" need to burn some fuel before landing and they can just as well burn it on the way to ORT.

They where planning to hold for 3hrs initially last night before landing. But like has being said they most likely could not get it fixed in CT

LWB.  I see SA 264 to MUC was cancelled.  Was it a technical issue?  Would have been ZS-SXE.

I am not sure. I will try find out for you. How long in advance was it cancelled? We alternate between MUC and FRA(SA 260) so they may have combined the 2? SXE is a A340-300, with the business rescue we were meant to stop flying all 4 engined aircraft, but I see some are still flying so not sure what's up. ZS-SNI(A340-600) is also still flying and those things are EXPENSIVE.

Could they jack it up in CT if it was required?

Just wondering if someone has the hangar space and equipment in CT

AFAIK, no, jacking is not an option for an aircraft of this size. CPT, although they are an international airport, are simply an out-station for us as SAAT. Getting them to change a wheel is hard enough(inside joke).

So, how many of us are needed to change a light bulb?  :whistling:

So, how many of us are needed to change a light bulb?  :whistling:

So how the wheel story.

The limit to change a wheel differs depending on the airport. So it says that if a base station does the inspection and the limit has been reached, change the wheel BUT it then allows, if you at an out-station and you reach the same limit, you can snag it and it can do one more sector provided it is a sector back to the base station. So if for eg it was due to fly JNB-CPT-ELS-JNB and CPT saw the tyre was worn and needed to be changed, they either have to change it, ground the aircraft or cancel the ELS route and send it back to JNB. Now we went through a stage where we were changing wheels that had been snagged by CPT like there was no tomorrow and they kept using this Manual reference to avoid changing the wheel. Then one day we have a JNB guy go down to CPT to help out for a few weeks and he checks that they have all the equipment and a few spare wheels lying in the store. He comes back and tells us all this. So now every time we chat to the CPT guys we bite them and say they scared to change wheels. So if you ever meet one of the SAAT CPT technicians, ask him when last he changed a wheel..............
