Help- Do I need to put slicks on the MTB for CTCT?

Hi Hub,

I'm already planning on doing the CTCT Mtb race, but I'm actually also thinking of doing the road race... It's just an excuse to get on the bike I guess.

Tell me, do I really need slicks or can I just do it with the MTB tyres? How much minutes give or take will slicks save me? I understand slicks will also save energy...

What can I expect to pay for basic rims and slicks which will most likely only be used once for this race if I do need to get them?

TIA

Don't listen to these jokers... It is literally impossible to do the road race on knobblies.

Definitely buy slicks and the biggest chainring you can fit on your bike.

Anything else and it's just pointless doing the race.

Views are rubbish, atmosphere is a non starter...

In all seriousness, if you don't own a roadbike, you aren't going to win. If you are looking at entering both you have 'some' legs so you will make the 26 hour cut off.

Pretty sure ANY tires will do

How fit are you? what does your road time and distances look like?

Like i said on another fred, Ill sacrifice the 15% energy saving and take the comfort which in return allows you to pedal for longer.

You are not going to win anything. Rather go out and enjoy the day.

Do not put slicks on your MTB. It is just wrong and an insult to your bike.

Done it with knobbies and slicks, and they do help a little bit.

But:

  1. Slicks on a 29er just looks wrong.
  2. The mess and / or cost of making 2 swaps to your tubeless set-up...

Am now rather looking for a cheapish road bike.
