imo it depends how new and/or soft your set of mtb tires are. i am not going to 'destroy' a new supersoft compound mtb tire riding 110 km on the road. You get dirt cheap slicks...like in R150 a tire cheap....and it WILL help your rolling resistance.

Thats me though....i'll be riding it on 26" with 160mm in front haha

maybe i'll wear a clown suit  :whistling:

Yeah, just run what you have or get some fast rolling knobblies like dasilvarsa suggested, there are lots of good options out. There is only about 12 watts difference in rolling resistance between a typical road and MTB tyre, a slick MTB tyre will at best get you back 5 of those watts. What really slows you down on a MTB is the short gearing and poor aerodynamics (body position), rather look at sorting those if you want to coax more speed.

How can it be impossible to do it on knobblies? I do it every year on the 94.7 for the past 5 years

My opinion: The tires will make a slight difference but, its the weight of the bike compared to that of a road bike where the main benefit lies. Obviously I'm over simplifying it, there's lots of other factors as well.

You have a mtb and want to do a road race, so, do it on the mtb and enjoy the ride. Yes it will be harder pedalling a 12-14kg behemoth up some of those climbs but you entered the race for the fun and not to compete with the 6-7kg racing bikes .

Don't listen to these jokers... It is literally impossible to do the road race on knobblies.

Definitely buy slicks and the biggest chainring you can fit on your bike.

Anything else and it's just pointless doing the race.

Views are rubbish, atmosphere is a non starter...

In all seriousness, if you don't own a roadbike, you aren't going to win. If you are looking at entering both you have 'some' legs so you will make the 26 hour cut off.

Pretty sure ANY tires will do

I use slicks - the only problem is I have to train in the dark as my bike is too embarrassed to be seen in the light. Slicks on a MTB really look silly - but it certainly makes for a faster ride.

Hi Hub,

I'm already planning on doing the CTCT Mtb race, but I'm actually also thinking of doing the road race... It's just an excuse to get on the bike I guess.

Tell me, do I really need slicks or can I just do it with the MTB tyres? How much minutes give or take will slicks save me? I understand slicks will also save energy...

What can I expect to pay for basic rims and slicks which will most likely only be used once for this race if I do need to get them?

TIA

Whenever someone asks a question like that, you really don't want to do it.

You literally answered yourself!!!

Some semi scientific numbers:

The difference between me on my carbon dura ace road bike and a steel single speed mtb with similar fitness is about 16%.

I would guess about 6% of that was due to the single gear and about 10% due to the knobblies versus 25c road slicks.
