DiData will be hurting this morning.

Darryl can hang his penguin shoes up in the near future with great pride.

TDU Champ

SA road and TT Champ

That’s helluva impressive.

That chain snap in the final sprint against Luigi at SA Champs a few years ago will be a vague memory.

May many more South Africans hard working cyclists reach these peaks.

Not really a sprinter in its true form when comparing to Kittel, Kristoff and the likes. Also not really a climb, its basically a roller in a classic type event.

So yes, really fast in a straight line on medium mountain stages.

All rounder is a better word i think?

True... DDD needed a Sagan or van Avermaet to stick with Impey.  I think Gibbons will still grow into this kind of racer.

Out of interest, is this Willie's kind of course or does he prefer the longer stuff? Was a bit surprised he wasn't here also.

Ja that climb is not 8.4%, they probably calculated the avg by including a drag before the climb actually starts.  When you hit the concrete, you're going over 20% in a lot of places and it only drops slightly on the second half, but nowhere near as low as 8%

We South Africans have a very screwed perception of climbs... because we have none!

That final bump in the road would not even classify in any tour, neither would any "climbs" in the benchmark of cycling, the Argus!  :whistling:

I've seen some perception changing climbs in the Alps and in Italy... next level times 10!

Not saying that is was not a tough climb, just saying.

I know it's not really a climb in terms of world tour classifications as it merely lasts 3 minutes for the pros.  But the "bump" does kick up more than 8%, otherwise Impey wouldn't have been able to drop the others like flies.  It's like something you get in the one day classics in Belgium, no one said it's like the Alps.

I am not sure if it was said before , did not go through the whole thread.

I was really impressed by DI , as a DD fan I thought they would take it, Gibbons, Reinie and De Bod looked so cool on his wheel the last time they started Tom Jenkins but he was to strong.

But I was surprised and enjoyed the fact that there were so many spectators, when the pro crested Tom Jenkins the last time you could hear the crown at the finish line.

I think this should be ranked as one of the best supported SA in a while.

It was also great to see the difference in climbing speed of the Vets vs the DI & DD group.

Daryls, brother posted a video where you can see their group passing on of the VETS on TJ.

Although he was a straggler it does give an idea.

Willie was racing in Europe. Valencia.

Rouleur.

Yeah, good alternative word for all-rounder

I was thinking puncheur as this was a rolling terrain kind of course with short steep climbing

Can’t wait for the Spring Classics

I type that phrase every year ????????‍♀️

As for Marc Pritzen taking the U23 win ....now there's a name to watch for the future

We ride with Marc when he has an easy day ....

He is also a humble polite gentleman of a guy .... Awesome for him .

Willie would of done well on this course, it suites him. He was racing Volta Valenciana for team duty which I guess was more important for him.

Something we would and do have to respect.

Do you know why he never? If so, have you taken that into account of his performance?

My question was if you thought he lived up to expectations. My question is not about his form or why he didn’t have form. But rather that people expected more from him last year.

So it’s not an attack on him, it just to create understanding that of course people will be negative about him after last years results, fans are people too.
