Rear Hub - Advice on buying a new one

Hi Guys,

I ride a Merida Ninety-Six 800 which runs a 148x12mm width rear hub (Bike bought in June 2018).

It looks like I have to get a new one because it keeps "stripping" (lack of a better word) i.e. you pedal and don'y go any where :)

It has been repaired twice and it keeps happening.

Heard Novatec and Hope rear Hubs are pretty good.

Still quite new to riding so looking to hear your guys opinions.

Thanks, Mark

hey Markus66,

Did you buy the bike new? If so, 9 months of riding should not kill a hub, unless you are either very hard on your toys i.e. ride very technical terrain in a balls to the wall way, or have ridden to the moon and back.

Could be the pawls on the freehub are shot, in which case go for a Hope or Chris King hub. They are solid, and should handle what you chuck their way.

I am just going out on a limb here, and wonder if the LBS has pointed out the obvious, i.e. weak hub, needs replacement etc?

(please note, I am not firing shots at the LBS or anyone here, just asking for clarity's sake)

If you don't want to sell a Kidney. Look at Rapide as well.

www.rapide.co.za

Been hammering these hubs for just over 3 months now, have done about a thousand km's, and they are still as good as new.

But before spending, get the supplier to give you a new hub, these things are meant to last at least longer than 9 months. Obviously the repair is not solving the problem, thus replacement is justified.

Hi Robbie,

Yeah bike was new. Wouldn't say I ride more than 3 times a week and I don't think my chicken legs would put out the kind of watts to be a "hard rider" :)

Yeah I think the bike shop will try with the LBS.

Thanks for reply

Hope pro 4 or DT Swiss 350. Both bulletproof and exceptional quality. Can't go wrong with either.

Apologies for the hijack - CFM, I have a hope pro 4 and when pushing the bike (not on he trail) the pedals remained motionless and you just heard the clicking noise from the hub, sent the bike in this weekend for a broken spoke and the mechanic said that he opened the rear hub and moved some spacers for some very technical reason which I cannot remember - bike goes great but hub now seems to be more "engaged" ie when I push the bike the pedals turn slowly almost as though the pawls are gripping more - I think this was the intention of the bike shop - does this make sense - as you can see I am not very mechanically minded

That sounds as if they've packed the pawls with more grease than they should have, which results in the pawls not being able to retract properly when freewheeling the bike forwards. Essentially there's a bit of friction acting on the freehub, which causes it to rotate the cassette when it should be still. Tension from the chain, BB bearings and derailleur is almost always enough to overcome the tension in the pawls, resulting in a static crank.

Sounds strange, tbh. Shouldn't need to "remove spacers" from the freehub internals, and I don't know of any there, anyway... not that I've studied the pro 4 internals all that closely...

Make sure that the dust cover is on properly as this can sometimes make the freehub hug onto the hub which causes your pedals to turn if the wheel is rotating. Either way the mechanic should have made sure that it was running 100% before leaving them. Take it back and get them to sort it out.

yeah, that's also true. Needs to be coerced into fitting back in its recess.

What hub is fitted?

I have the big nine XT edition and it has a shimano hub(not XT) and I recently had to change the freehub. What happened to me was intermittent. I would stop pedaling and the freehub would carry on(almost like I was fixed gear) and my derailleur would start to wind up. Luckily each time it happened I would quickly start peddling again. My LBS said that they don't last and do need to be replaced. I replaced it but TBH would rather just get a better quality hub next time if it happens again.

Great choices.  I use the Hope Pro4 on my trail bike and it's loud and noisy and lovely.   I dont think there is Hope distribution in SA though?

But DT is distributed by the Get Stoked dudes who are on top of things - chat to them for a dealer, and you cannot go wrong with DT.
