I found this pic taken of a Marathon / XC rider on the Epic .... why is he pushing, I used to ride up this section on my Single Speed  :whistling:

I can't see how this qualifies the guy as an endurance athlete then, since he is already pushing on the prologue stage of the 8 stage Cape Epic...? By day 3 he is properly in his moegoe.

1 - You don't know how many km of reasonably technical riding (climbing AND descending) they've done up till this point

2 - If someone in front of you stops on a climb, it stuffs with your rhythm and you generally get off and push as well

3 - it may be steeper than it actually looks, and it seems as if the grade increases as they get into the trees

4 - Enduro isn't about the climbs. There's generally a limit on how long you can take to do a climb (in more competitive Enduro's / EWS events etc) but the goal is to be fastest on the downs. Preserving yourself on the climbs helps to do that.

5-They are fat and unfit.

People who ride endurance rides, as you call them, will not be able to sufficiently handle the technical nature of an enduro course.

In this case, enduro is more like a downhill race, with some ups thrown in for good measure. They are ridden in timed stages with each stage having a defined start and finish, measured by timing devices, usually worn on the wrist like a watch. At the start, they get scanned, and again at the end. In between, contestants go like bats out of hell to the bottom.

This is why they don't ride up a hill if they can help it. They are normally pretty poked after a stage.

I always thought this simply qualifies as a standard mtb stage race then?

That was when Woodstock still had a beach mate. I can see it down there.

this was probably that 1 ride on the mountain... since then that owner of the junior wheel size'd bicycle has only seen the cycle lane
