i try to always keep a level of fitness so that I can:

run 8km in 40 minutes

cycle at 200W for 3 hours (30km/hr on a flattish course with a road bike)

i find every type of riding/training (road, marathon, enduro, DH and triathlon) to be a tonne of fun when I maintain this level of base fitness

This experience has made me realize how much long distance riding can do ffor your fitness on shorter high energy rides, like enduro races.

Anyone else have any insights?

Well to put it into perspective - when Minnaar went overseas for the first time when he was in Juniors - his coach said the following to him (which he later told me).

"if you cannot place in the top 3 in your category in a Regional Cross Country event, give up Downhill"

Ok this was in like 1997 ... but still - it shows what you need to be at the top of your game in the Gravity disciplines. Think now - how the top DH boys and girls can easily go and do Epic or JHB2C at the drop of a hat and still do ok ...

XC training is vital - but so is Gym, and I also found that BMX racing (Crusier Class) helped me when I was in Elites.

That tuck and roll practice is great but... as I have found when you crash at speed, it doesnt really work. You become a victim of gravity.

Then it becomes more about hoping you hit the ground with as many parts of your body as possible to minimize the risk of one part taking the full impact. My collarbone break left me with barely a scratch but a very broken bone.

Jujitsu.

I can help

Darn, there goes my impending business idea of charging middle aged men $$$ for #enduro specific classes in rolly polly's.

Interesting and true. I rode the S2C in 2007. GM did it too and placed in the top 20 I think.

he would not fall into your demographic of "middle ages" ... you may have to start a more expensive and "exclusive" set of classes for aged men :P

There were some great podcasts I'll try to find but core is one of the biggest thing in terms of making you able to do more, go longer and deal with injury issues. Also watching the Pink bike Privateer series showed what extra strength work can do and how integral it is. I think there is a bit of series on Downtimepodcast from the guy at Fit4Racing which are pretty interesting. I was planning to sign up to a online Enduro fitness program that was a UK thing but seemed to make a lot of sense but again I've gone and lost the link. Doh.

+1 for Jonny Thompson from Fit4racing. The video and sample programme in Part 2 on the Downtime podcast is really good & specific training for enduro/trail riding.

Of course you need a good base and focused training on the bike takes priority, but if you're going to be in a gym definitely check this out.

Love this vid. TH just sounds as if she's truly overjoyed when she's riding her bike.

Close your eyes and it sounds a bit like a porn movie sound track - "Oh Paul...."

There's plenty of routines on the web and Youtube.

Information overload quite possible.

Check out Richie Rude's and Nino's Gym routines on youtube. Damn...
